Join the Spring 2025 Dukakis Lecture with Sarah B. Snyder on April 30

Following the centennial of the establishment of Anatolia College in Thessaloniki, and to commemorate its 25th anniversary season of public service initiatives, the Michael and Kitty Dukakis Center for Public and Humanitarian Service at ACT has invited Sarah B. Snyder, Professor of Global Inquiry at American University in Washington, DC, to deliver the Spring 2025 Dukakis Lecture.

Building Schools Abroad: American Expats as Informal Diplomats
Wednesday, April 30, 6 PM
Emilios Riadis Hall - Helexpo

SIGN UP HERE

The lecture will be based on Professor Snyder’s forthcoming book, “Unofficial Diplomats,” which illustrates how private American citizens shaped the place of the United States in the world throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, serving as unofficial diplomats, representing the United States when formal relations did not exist or functioning as informal ambassadors to foreign communities alongside official U.S. representatives. Of particular interest to Anatolia College stakeholders are the efforts of expat Americans to create schools, colleges, and other cultural institutions in Greece and Ottoman Asia Minor.

The lecture will place in context the transformation which took place when Anatolia migrated to Thessaloniki, and will elucidate the efforts of American expats - missionaries and secular figures alike who contributed, and continue to contribute, to the school’s well being and renown. The event will also be an opportunity to take stock of the many lectures and other extracurricular activities which have contributed to forging Anatolia’s unique identity over the decades.

Joining Professor Snyder for post-lecture discussion will be representatives of Anatolia College, the American Farm School, and the American School of Classical Studies, all of which constitute the types of institutions created by American expats in a formative period of US foreign relations.

Evi Tramanza, Anatolia College
Damiana Koutsomiha, American Farm School
Natalia Vogeikoff-Brogan, American School for Classical Studies in Athens

The lecture will be in English and is open to the general public. Please use the sign up link above to reserve your seat.

Dukakis Center hosts American University scholar James Quirk

As it wraps up its 25th anniversary season of public service initiatives this semester, the Dukakis Center has returned to the practice of hosting short-term visiting fellows from select partner institutions for short periods of time. The Center’s first such visitor was Dr. James Quirk, Professorial Lecturer in Politics at American University(AU), who spent the first week of March 2025 in residence.

The original function of the Dukakis Chair was to host a visiting academic or practitioner for an extended period, even a full academic term. Thus ACT hosted former White House Science Advisor Eugene Skolnikoff of MIT (Fall 2000) and James Veras, sometime Corporate Vice President of Ford Motor Company and founding President of the World Environment Center (Fall 2001).

When it was recognized that this practice of hosting long-term fellows was unworkable, it became the practice to host short-term fellows, Who were occasionally offered accommodation on campus in the Morley House attic. Among those visiting ACT in this capacity were Suhnaz Yilmaz of Koç University, Alan Cafruny of Hamilton College, Richard Katula of Northeastern University, retired US Ambassador to Greece Monteagle Stearns, and retired US Ambassador to Senegal Harriet Elam-Thomas.

Later still, after the Chair had been transformed into a collegiate Center, local figures of some renown were invited to serve as Dukakis Professor, most notably Simon Benssason, recently retired from the European Commission. More recently, several guests have conducted Dukakis Masterclasses since 2014, including Michael Dukakis himself. (link to article)

Having emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic in 2023-24, the timing was considered ripe to resume hosting colleagues short-term from select partner schools such as Northeastern and American Universities, in order in part to enhance these institutional partnerships.

As fortune would have it, the Dukakis Center hosted three interns from American University in 2023-24. One of them, Jack Roberts, was invited to canvas and identify faculty at AU who might be of interest to the Center as short-term fellows (4-8 days). Dr. Quirk was selected notably for his experience studying Balkan politics (he taught for a year in Bulgaria) and his capacity as a student of comparative politics to speak meaningfully about both American and European politics.

During his residence, Dr. Quirk made an impromptu visit to Dr. Wisner’s course in applied ethics to join a comparative discussion on the ethics of Hobbes’ social contract theory and Realist IR theory. He then featured in Dr. Mavrikos European Studies 211 class for a wide-ranging debate on foreign policy making in the US and the EU.

Finally, Dr. Quirk had dinner at the Queen Olga residence hall with a dozen AU study abroad students currently attending classes at ACT, an outing facilitated by ACT’s student services department. Earlier he had met with ACT Provost Stamos Karamouzis for a review of the ACT-AU study abroad partnership.

Dr. Quirk is the first of two colleagues from American University to be invited to help celebrate the Dukakis Center’s silver jubilee season of public service initiatives this year. Later this spring, on April 30, Professor Sarah Snyder, of AU’s School of Global Service, will deliver a Dukakis Lecture on the educational activities of American civilian expats in late Ottoman Asia Minor.

Dukakis Center at ACT to host session at Beyond 2025

The Michael and Kitty Dukakis Center for Public and Humanitarian Service will organize a session at this year’s Beyond technology forum and exhibition, to take place at the Metropolitan Expo Centre, Athens. David Wisner, Executive Director of the Dukakis Center, will host a fireside chat on “AI, Social Contracts, and Digital Literacy” with Clay Shirky, author of Here Comes Everybody (2008) and Vice Provost for AI and Technology in Education at New York University. The Dukakis Center is moreover a supporting institution at Beyond 2025.

Named a “Top 100 Global Thinker” by Foreign Policy in 2010, Clay Shirky has published six books and appears frequently in the mainstream media. At New York University since 2001, his current role includes designing, developing and enhancing all academic aspects of technology-based teaching and learning. Mr Shirky also has teaching affiliations at NYU with the Arthur L. Carter Center of Journalism and the Tisch School of the Arts. In 2014-2017, he served as Chief Information Officer at NYU Shanghai.

According to the event organizers, “BEYOND is an international digital technology and innovation exhibition taking place in Thessaloniki since 2021. From artificial intelligence to virtual reality, the exhibition serves as a hub for networking, knowledge sharing, and hands-on experience with pioneering innovations. Beyond 2025 will focus on confronting the practical and sometimes harsh realities of artificial intelligence as it integrates into various aspects of society.”

The Dukakis Center session will take place on Saturday, April 5, at 2:35 PM and will focus on three principal themes,

  • how Professor Shirky’s thinking about technologically enhanced social interaction has evolved since the late 1990s;
  • how AI is altering this picture;
  • how one attains “AI literacy” in a learning environment like New York University

The Dukakis Center has organized events previously with two of the principal organizers of Beyond, now in its fifth year. Both Anastasios Tzikas, President of the Board of Helexpo, and Mihalis Stangos, Managing Director and CEO of MSCOMM, have spoken under the Dukakis Center banner, most recently in May 2020, when Mr, Tzikas appeared in the landmark Covid era Zoom webinar entitled “Φέτος το φεστιβάλ θα είναι διαφορετικό.” Dr. Wisner has appeared meanwhile at Helexpo, having presented Spyros Katsoulas’ book Διλήμματα στο Τρίγωνο in May 2023 at the Thessaloniki International Book Fair.

Katherine "Kitty" Dukakis 1936-2025

The Dukakis Center mourns the passing of Kitty Dukakis, former First Lady of Massachusetts, who passed away in Brookline, MA, on Friday, March 21, 2025. She was 88.

Ms Dukakis visited Thessaloniki and ACT on three occasions with her husband, former Massachusetts Governor and 1988 Democratic Nominee for President of the United States Michael S. Dukakis. While on campus she participated in several activities with ACT students, and conducted a seminar-style discussion on her experience with electroconvulsive therapy. During her time interacting with the ACT community she came across as a genuinely passionate and compelling personality.

Says David Wisner, Executive Director of the Dukakis Center at ACT, who hosted the Dukakis’ at his home in Panorama and visited them whenever he travelled to the United States, “Kitty Dukakis came across as thoroughly courageous and dignified. She was well aware of her role as someone in the public eye. We were incredibly fortunate to have hosted her at ACT. Looking back, the decision by the Anatolia College Board of Trustees to name our Center after both Michael and Kitty Dukakis was enlightened and inspiring.”

Ms Dukakis served and was engaged in many capacities, among which in the context of the President’s Commission on the Holocaust and then of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. In her own words, she said her role was to help “recognize the suffering of other people as we look at the Holocaust so that we will speak out against inhumanity.”

May her memory be a blessing.
