On Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at 19:00, the Thessaloniki Concert Hall hosts the renowned and awarded British novelist and writer Jonathan Coe. The author will be joined on stage by Eleni Godi, Coordinator, BA in English, at ACT, and Yiannis Kotsifos, journalist, for a special evening where the readers will have the opportunity to discuss with the author his work, life, and projects. The event is co-organized with the support of the 'Konstantinidis" Bookstore.

The famous English novelist was born in Birmingham, United Kingdom, on August 19, 1961. He has taught at the University of Warwick, where he completed his postgraduate and doctoral studies in English Literature. In 1994 his fourth novel, What a Carve Up!, won the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and the Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger in France. It was followed by The House of Sleep, which won the Writers' Guild of Great Britain Best Novel award and, in France, the Prix Médicis. As of 2022, Coe has published fourteen novels.

This year he returns with Bournville: The Divided Kingdom, Polis Publications, which tells the story of a British family living in Bourneville, a suburb of Birmingham, experiencing seventy-five years of drastic social change, from war to Brexit and the coronavirus.

On March 23rd, Ms. Christiana Smirli, the first ACT Psychology graduate who received ATEEN (an Independent Department for the Implementation of European Legislation at the Greek Ministry of Education) recognitionof professional rights to work as a Licensed Psychologist, was a guest speaker at Psychology 303: Educational Psychology in the undergraduate program of psychology. The presentation was tied to the curriculum but also involved classroom learning activities.

 Four ACT Psychology students supported as volunteers the Easter Egg Hunt event that ELEPAP, the oldest non-profit organization in Greece providing rehabilitation services to children, organized on April 5th at the Grand HotelPalace, Thessaloniki. 

Our volunteers were needed to continuously hide the Easter eggs for all attending children and operate the games. Ms. Eva Sarigiannidou,Director of ELEPAP, coordinated the egg hunt with the counselors of ELEPAP and students. Parents and caregivers also enjoyed the creative and fun egg-hunting ideas.

On March 23rd, undergraduate psychology students visited the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki campus accompanied by their instructors, Dr. Maria Psoinos and Ms. Despoina Dimopoulou, within the context of their class, PSY 204: Social Psychology. The visit involved walking through different buildings where various academic departments are located (Department of Education, Polytechnic School, Faculty of Philosophy, Pedagogy, and Education). While visiting the departments and looking at the surroundings, the posters containing announcements or political messages, etc., the students had the opportunity to reflect on issues covered in the Social Psychology class, such as social influence, persuasion, and majority-minority dynamics.

Academic field trips provide educational opportunities outside the classroom, allowing for course-related experiences beyond the ACT community. After the pandemic, field trips can become an integral part of our psychology programs where everyone, students and faculty, can benefit from the experience.

The American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) and the Jena Centre for Reconciliation Studies (JCRS) at Friedrich Schiller University, in cooperation with the Foreign Affairs Institute (www.fainst.eu), the MOHA Research Center (www.moha.center), and the Balkan Strategies International Synergies (BSIS) launch the 2nd Kavala International Summer School on the cultural and political importance of waters, domestic and international (Kavala, 3-11 September 2023).

The Summer School combines academic theory and the praxis of diplomacy to analyze policies and behaviors enabling reconciliation, tolerance, social cohesion, and good neighborliness at the local, national, and international levels, focusing on regional cooperation and development related to safeguarding the environment for future generations. 

It is ideal for students studying international relations, security studies, international law, culture, and environmental protection and for young diplomats, business people, and young leaders. In addition, the participants will be able to improve their professional skills as they will work on real cases with politicians, leaders, and senior diplomats.

The program includes three cultural events and excursions to important archaeological sites and environmentally protected areas of Kavala prefecture. 

The Summer School will be able to provide scholarships for some of the participating students.

The Bissell Library at ACT is hosting the painting exhibition "ContrA-dictions" by visual artists and Anatolia alumnae Margarita Lypiridou '86 and Emmy Kotoula '83. The exhibition's official opening will be held on Thursday, April 6, at 20:00. The exhibition will be open to the public until June 16, 2023.

Margarita Lypiridou '86 is a visual artist, painter, and printmaker. She studied painting, photography, and applied arts in her native Greece and England before moving to Montreal in 2002. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Print Media and a Master's in Fine Arts in Studio Arts from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. After living almost twenty years in Montreal, in the summer of 2021, Lypiridou returned to her hometown, Thessaloniki, to set up her art practice there. Her studio is now in the heart of the Mediterranean city, and her painting is infused with its surrounding vistas, smells, and sounds. Since 1995 she has participated in solo and group exhibitions, and her work is part of collections in Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East. 

About her work 

In this work, Lypiridou mainly presents her figures, which dominate the canvas. These figures seem like iterations of the same person. The closer we look, however, the more this initial resemblance conceals complicated forces at work. With no facial expressions to read, the body language and placement of the figures are brought vividly to the fore. The variety of the brushstrokes suggests the forces that sweep human beings together or drive them apart. The fluid drips, the flurry of scratches, and a sweeping, almost transparent veneer of white that suffuses many of these canvases with a movement we can feel more than see. Whether she presents her figures or her semi-abstract landscapes, her work explores sites of wander and wonder, the locus of gathering and exchange, and is the result of the desire for the search for rhythm in the silence and fluidity of life. It is driven by the need to articulate a presence and denote humans' transient nature while accentuating the ephemerality and volatility of being. The artist works with layers upon layers of acrylic, oil, and mixed media, scraping and re-applying color multiple times, constantly revealing and concealing different parts of the painting in an attempt to create visual and spatial relationships among the various elements, and to render visible the tentative, the fluid, the ephemeral.

Emmy Kotoula '83 was born in Thessaloniki, where she lives and works as a surgeon dentist. While studying at the Dental School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, she decided to pursue her love for art. She started attending painting and sculpture classes in ateliers and art studios. Later her need for communicating through visual expression led her to attend the School of Fine Arts of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. During the same period, she apprenticed to two renowned visual artists- painters in Thessaloniki, deepening the aniconic art. She has crafted book covers; many of her works are in private collections.

About her work 

Her artistic work is mainly influenced by abstract expressionists and writers such as Kazantzakis (the void of the abyss through which he thrives). Her approach to art is anthropocentric, psychographic, and ontological. It is the essence of man's existential concerns. Hence the titles of her collections are an abyss, endo, burning, etc. Her artworks are subject to the charm of archetypical natural materials (stones, sand, wood, seaweed, shells, etc.). These materials are glued and painted on the canvas with acrylics and eventually burned with a blowtorch. Her painting is spontaneous, intuitive, and partly gestured. Her canvas, through the stratification of materials, acquires intense materiality. The artist believes in art's catalytic and redeeming effect on the human soul. Therefore, her work aspires to boost the despair of loss to the hope of rebirth, optimistically valuing the cycle of life.

On March 23, 2023, the masterclass "Politics and New Technologies" took place at the Hyatt Hotel in Belgrade as a joint event of ACT's Division of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of Political Science at the University of Belgrade. It was a follow-up event to the 2019 partnership agreement between the two institutions. ACT adj. professor Dr. Christos Aliprantis and UBelgrade assistant professor Dr. Ivana Damnjanovic reflected on how technology has decisively affected and will further shape democracy in the 21st century. They also discussed the role of artificial intelligence in political participation; the political and societal impact of new modes of warfare; the sharpening of global inequalities due to technology; and the spread of misinformation and polarisation in contemporary societies primarily due to social media platforms. The event was well-attended by students at various levels of their studies; NGO professionals; educators; and technology experts, who participated in the discussion during the Q&A round.

After the successful and impactful trip to the National Park of Lake Kerkini a year ago, the ACT students return to repeat the volunteering initiative toward the protection of the wetland and the future of our planet! On March 12, 2023, in close collaboration with the Management Body of Kerkini and Oikoperiigitis Hotel, 20 ACT students worked toward the protection of the Dalmatian and Great White Pelican communities. Specifically, students collected and tightened up several bunches of reeds, loaded them on a truck, and transported them to the core of the National Park. The students untightened the reeds and scattered them in the area at this place, which is close to the pelicans’ community. In turn, the pelicans will pick up and use the fragments of the reeds as material to build their nests. In that manner, the pelicans overcome the difficulty of finding available tree branches since the number of local trees is declining because of overgrazing and other environmental reasons. 

Later in the day, the ACT students moved their efforts to the dock of Kerkini village, on the west side of the lake, and collected several bags of trash, primarily plastic bottles, microplastics, and styrofoam used as equipment by fishermen. After the volunteering activities, students relaxed on a boat trip while watching flamingos wandering for food in the riparian areas of the lake.

The objective of this school-sponsored activity was to expose students to the environmental needs of the local area and to expand their knowledge about the importance of the wetlands for our ecosystems and the threats the wetlands face. The students left with a feeling that they could both enjoy the day and make a difference. It is very optimistic that students defined the trip with very positive words.

The President of the Management Body of Kerkini Lake,  Naziridis Theodoros, the Oikoperiigitis, and other local professionals were very thankful. The ACT students are already invited to the next initiative toward the preservation efforts. The International Programs and Student Services Office is proud to support the community while fulfilling the mission and vision of ACT to “be known as the institution that contributes to society.”

Nikos graduated from ACT in June 2006 with a B.A. in Marketing and a minor in Web Development and Multimedia. After completing his Greek military service, he moved to San Francisco in January 2008 where he completed his Master's degree in Integrated Marketing Communication at Golden Gate University.

He currently serves as a Senior Product Marketing Manager at Apple, with a focus on worldwide small business marketing. Prior to this, he was a Director of Product Marketing at Salesforce and head of marketing at Twin Prime (Acquired by Salesforce) and Sustainable Brands. In 2019, he founded GiveRoll.org, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in San Francisco with a mission to allow everyday donors to have a greater impact on the issues they assign higher priorities.

In 2012, he and a few friends founded dopios.com (now WelcomePickups.com), a community marketplace where travelers can discover authentic experiences curated by locals.

The best memory I have of ACT…

I can't recall a single best memory. If I had to pick one, it would be graduation day. It's the day you realize that everything you worked hard for came to fruition. I have so many memories, though. My best friend is the first person I met on my first day at ACT. Crazy, huh?

My favorite professor was …

There were so many that I would like to thank, and I don't know where to start. If I had to choose, though, I would pick Panos Vlachos because of his mentorship. Mr. Vlachos was my advisor and the person I owe the most for my career success. It was his advice that helped me develop my path.

My favorite spot on campus …

The Cafeteria is where we would meet with my friends and chat, compare notes, and have coffee and a bite. So many unforgettable memories from that spot. The library is a close second! Back then, it was a brand-new building, and we would spend a lot of time in the labs!

ACT helped me to…

understand my passion and where I want to be. (Physically and professionally). I'm not sure if I would live in San Francisco and work in Tech Marketing if I didn't go to ACT. So I owe a lot to the professors and staff.

For me, ACT is…

a place to discover what you want to do professionally. At ACT, you get many opportunities to find your passion. In addition, you have plenty of time to explore anything from philosophy to computer science or business. This is very important to an 18-year old who is asked to choose a path for the rest of their life.

The best part of my job is…

I work at the headquarters of one of the biggest tech companies in the world. What I love about it is the access to cutting-edge technology and incredible innovation and the impact of my work on millions of people worldwide.

I consider this an important moment in my professional journey…

My professional career had many significant moments, decisions, failures, and successes. This is true for everyone. A critical decision was when I moved to the tech space because this is what I love. But the most crucial moment was when we launched our startup, dopios.com. We had been working on this side project for many months during our evenings and weekends. That day we launched the website and started getting real web traffic and press inquiries was one of the happiest days in my professional career.

In the future, I want to…

help young professionals and entrepreneurs in Greece and the U.S. to advance their careers. In my 15-year career, I had so many mentors and supporters to help me along the way, and it's very important to me to pass this on to younger generations.
