Service Learning
Service Learning is a term we use to describe active learning through participation with community organizations offering services to society that improve the well-being of one or more cross-sections of population. The student role is a support role that helps meet a need the organization has. The learning component is what makes Service Learning different from other types of volunteer work. In Service Learning, students are encouraged to ask questions and make observations about their partner organizations so that they have a better and deeper understanding of the community and how it functions. Service Learning offers students a unique opportunity to approach and get a better understanding of Greek society in ways that would otherwise be inaccessible to them. (This is something that sometimes eludes students so please point it out to them!)
Students are partnered with community organizations based on their availability (academic schedule). Students receive a placement sheet that describes the location, time commitment, and type of work that will be done during the semester. Students are expected to be on time for every session and to inform Christina Moma (ACT Student Services Office) if an issue arises that prevents them from attending. Students are chaperoned to their first session to learn the route and to meet the staff of the organization. (At two SL sites, Melissa Girls’ Orphanage and at KAPAATH rehabilitation center, students are chaperoned to all subsequent sessions; this is to ensure that they receive sufficient support to perform their duties). Students are assigned in groups of 2 or 3.

Make sure you have the ID with you before entering the class in order to avoid any misunderstanding is case the faculty refuses to sign the verification form even if you have attended the session.

If you wish to DOUBLE the points of this activity, you can write and submit a reflection paper, ½-2 pages long, reflecting on that experience/activity.
