Having studied at ACT, I always knew that for the students coming from abroad, Thessaloniki would leave an important mark on them. I never really understood exactly why, after all, I don’t come from abroad.  This weekend, I got a glimpse as to why, and it was simpler than I previously thought. They spend time with people they would not have otherwise.

Attending the same school is not enough. Living together is not enough. You need an extra push for that. And here comes the Athens – Delphi trip. Like other ACT trips, it served its purpose. To create an aura of community, familiarity, and comfort. Among the various exciting trips ACT offers, the Athens – Delphi trip is I believe the most beautiful one of a kind.  This trip invites people to express themselves in a way that they would otherwise not have done.

Ironically the most beautiful part of the trip for me was one that someone may have expected me to suffer the most. That is, the long bus drive and the long walks! However, it was an extraordinary, beautiful experience. Why? you may ask. Because you get to discover unexplored areas with people you have only known for a month!
Besides this, the Athens – Delphi trip is great because it serves its purpose. To create an aura of community. Being part of the ACT International Programs Office, I saw first-hand all the effort that is put into taking students to a whole different region of the world where, not only they don’t speak the local language, but most importantly, don’t surround themselves with the same people as always. This is the opportunity for everyone to express themselves openly, like never done. An opportunity to make friendships you otherwise would not have. These trips are an essential part of the self-discovery and friend-creation process each one aspires to achieve and have in their lifetimes!
Athens, of course, is a huge, lively, and electrifying city. It sticks to students' memories like no other city. Karaoke, delicious food, nice views from the hotel, young and old people, crazy taxi drivers, they all serve this common striking experience. 

But... but, listen to the best part about this trip. After getting a good feel of Athenian culture and nightlife, you get to experience something peculiar. A strange feeling. A feeling you will not get to experience anywhere else. And that is... Delphi. Being an ancient region, it definitely provides visitors with an ancient aura. An aura of myths, important decisions that shaped the ancient world, and an aura of fatalism. An amazing view indeed, it gave us a glimpse of how life, architecture, and philosophy were constructed back in ancient times. Isn’t it so beautiful to witness something ancient and modern at the same time?

Both places serve as a tool for community building. A community that will be forever marked into students' memories. A community where students are able to reconstruct their ideas, self-perceptions, and make new friendships that will last forever. I was lucky enough to have my younger sister join me in this experience. She is a bit tough to satisfy, but guess what, she was extremely satisfied.

Aναλυτική Θεματολογία

Ελληνική αγορά Οικιστικών & Επαγγελματικών Ακινήτων

Αυτή η  ενότητα του προγράμματος εισάγει κάθε εκπαιδευόμενο  στην οργάνωση της ελληνικής αγοράς ακινήτων τόσο σε οικιστικά όσο και σε επαγγελματικά ακίνητα. Αναφερόμαστε στις σημαντικές διαστάσεις που ξεχωρίζουν τα ακίνητα και τη σημασία των χαρακτηριστικών τους κάθε φορά που βρίσκονται στην αγορά. Αναλύουμε την οργάνωση της Ελληνικής αγοράς και τα οικονομικά χαρακτηριστικά κάθε κατηγορίας, με αναφορές σε διαθέσιμα στατιστικά στοιχεία. Η εισαγωγική αυτή ενότητα στοχεύει στην ενημέρωση του εκπαιδευόμενου, ως προς την πολυδιάστατη και διαφοροποιημένη αγορά των ακινήτων.

Εισαγωγή, προσέγγιση και ανάλυση βασικών μεθόδων στην Εκτίμηση ακινήτων

Στην  ενότητα αυτή αναπτύσσεται η κεντρική ιδέα του σεμιναρίου και γίνεται η εισαγωγή στις βασικές μεθόδους εκτίμησης ακινήτων που χρησιμοποιούνται στην αγορά. Σκοπός είναι η δημιουργία αντίληψης πάνω στο στόχο και τη χρησιμότητα της εκτιμητικής στην καθημερινότητα ενός επαγγελματία ή επενδυτή στην αγορά ακινήτων. Θα γίνει ανάλυση των 3 βασικών εκτιμητικών μεθόδων, ενώ θα δοθούν βασικά παραδείγματα με σκοπό την κατανόηση και χρήση των μεθόδων.

Ανάλυση μακροπρόθεσμων & βραχυπρόθεσμων τάσεων αγοράς

Σε αυτή την ενότητα συνεχίζουμε με μια εισαγωγή σε στατιστικές μεθόδους ανάλυσης βραχυπρόθεσμων και μεσοπρόθεσμων τάσεων στα στοιχεία αγοράς ακινήτων.  Η ανάλυση αποτελεί μία σημαντική διαδικασία στο σχεδιασμό επενδυτικών και εκτιμητικών αναλύσεων. Οι γνώσεις τεχνικών πρόγνωσης αναπτύσσει τις βασικές σας δεξιότητες στην καλύτερη και αρτιότερη τεχνική εκτίμησης ενός ακινήτου.

Επενδύσεις Ακινήτων

Στην ενότητα αυτή ο εκπαιδευόμενος πλαισιώνει τις γνώσεις του χωρίζοντας την αγορά ακινήτων σε συγκεκριμένες αγορές με άξονα διάφορα στοιχεία όπως, τοποθεσία, ζήτηση, αξίες κτλ.   Αναπτύσσει μοντέλα αποφάσεων με στοιχεία μικροοικονομικής θεωρίας, αντιλαμβάνεται την πορεία της αγοράς, συνδυάζει την τεχνικές εκτίμησης και πρόγνωσης αξίας ακινήτων με σκοπό την καλύτερη και αποδοτικότερη απόφαση.   

Εισηγητής

Ο Στέφανος Βαγιάνος είναι οικονομολόγος με πτυχίο οικονομικών από το Sussex University του Brighton στη Μ. Βρετανία. Με δεκαπενταετή επαγγελματική εμπειρία έχει εργαστεί σε πολυεθνικές επιχειρήσεις σε Αθήνα και Θεσσαλονίκη στους τομείς των Οικονομικών, του Marketing και του Human Resources. Έχει απασχοληθεί ως Σύμβουλος Ανάπτυξης Επιχειρήσεων και Εκπαιδευτής, αναλαμβάνοντας τη διαχείριση έργων Ε.Σ.Π.Α και Ο.Α.Ε.Δ για πάνω από 500 επιχειρήσεις στην Ελλάδα. Από το 2012 έχει δημιουργήσει την εταιρεία Spaces 3D με αντικείμενο το Marketing και τη Ανάπτυξη μικρών επιχειρήσεων στον τομέα του Real Estate και του Τουρισμού.

Pindaro Demertzoglou ‘95 was class valedictorian, an active and serious student who regards ACT as a game-changer for his life. He received a full scholarship to study at ACT where he received a BA in Business Administration (Finance) graduating with an overall GPA of 3.8 out of 4.0. He went on to pursue an MBA in Entrepreneurship and an MA in Management Information Systems at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, before achieving his Ph.D. in Information Science at SUNY Albany in 2007. He is a Business Analytics and Database Specialist, who from 2018 to 2021 was the Director, Program of Business Analytics, Lally School of Management, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Over the last three years, he has worked with Johnson & Johnson, deFacto Global, United Aircraft Technologies, Inc, and IPPSEC (ippsecpro.com). He has recently left the United States and returned to Greece, where he plans to open a publishing house.

You were born in Alexandroupoli, in Northern Greece. How did you decide to pursue to study in Thessaloniki at ACT in the specific field? 

I was very interested in Management Information Systems and ACT had provided a tour of its computer lab back then. I was ecstatic and I made the decision right there that I wanted to pursue an education at ACT. It is a decision I have never regretted after 30 years from that moment! 

What do you remember most of your years as a student at ACT?

I remember a very demanding curriculum that required daily work on a constant basis. The faculty would never leave any slack and the workweek was full of homework, projects, presentations, and assignments. Especially during the first semester, it was a demanding familiarization process. Everyone was inspiring, it was the type of educational environment I was looking for. When I say everyone, I mean everybody from the registrar, the faculty, the staff, the librarians, the gardeners, and even the president’s office. The president’s office at ACT was and I am sure is, by far more responsive than presidential offices in some of the universities I am aware of in the States.

You were also a scholarship recipient - how did this aid shape your future and opportunities?

The scholarship received from the ACT was an extremely important factor for my studies. I was able to complete my studies on time and actually, it was a scholarship that allowed me to continue my studies in the US. Not only was I a scholarship recipient, I was also working as a work-study helper at the library.

What are the core values that you got from your education experience at ACT? How would you describe ACT in a few words?

The values I remember very well were integrity, ethics, methodical work, critical thinking, and hard work. There are others, but these are what I remember well.

How did ACT prepare you for your advanced studies and the American environment?

When I went for postgraduate studies to one of the highest-ranked universities in the States, I realized that at ACT the faculty and administration were doing an amazing job in educating students. ACT is at the equivalent or higher educational level than any University in the US. There were many students from around the globe in my class and I once more achieved valedictorian status for the MBA degree. Consequently, ACT prepared me in the best possible way for top performance in industry and postgraduate studies.

Do you have a favorite project among the ones you have worked on as a researcher or during your collaborations with major multinational companies?

I have worked with more than fifteen companies and everything was extremely interesting and challenging. One very interesting project I remember was with Johnson & Johnson, working with cloud-based data for an analytics project.

What are the essential components of a good professor in your field?

He or she should have hands-on experience in the industry to be a successful professor in the field of corporate analytics.   

What are the future trends in the design and application of business analytics models and decision support systems?

The field of business analytics will continue to grow extensively for a significant period of time because its methods and models have a tangible impact on the efficiency of the business that possesses these models giving it a definite competitive advantage over its competitors.     

How can we make the best use of Artificial intelligence in the decision support systems?

Developing processes, methods, and models that involve AI and help the corporation is not the same as utilizing a piece of technology. It will take time and effort by the data scientists to develop and fine-tune these models, such as prediction models, and this effort will be needed on a continuous basis. 

What would you advise the students who wish to pursue studies in this field?

I would say that it is well worth it, they should apply to Universities in the US, and participate in internships while they study. It is a field without limits and they can work on analytics for businesses or cyber security analytics at NASA.    

And the Greek academics and entrepreneurial community?

My top advice to both is to collaborate more; that is, businesses should make an effort to hire more interns and professors to participate in hands-on projects with businesses.  

This past summer, two new science laboratories, one for Physics and the other for Biology, were added to the Science Wing of Constantinidis Hall with a Lab for Organic Chemistry slated to be finished during the spring semester of 2022. These new labs were constructed to support expanding demand of our undergraduates as well as to service the growing number of Study Abroad students seeking majors in sciences.

The labs at ACT are equipped with state-of-the-art laboratory instruments and devices in order to carry out molecular, biochemical, and physiological analyses. These include qualitative and quantitative determination of gene expression, the study of metabolic pathways, and investigation of physiological parameters under stressful conditions. The laboratory facilities give students access to an impressive array of technologies, equipment, and apparatuses. Combined with the expertise of the faculty members who run the labs and carry out numerous research projects, students have the space and support to grow scientifically and become part of a flourishing academic community.

ACT’s footprint has been greatly expanded with the acquisition of an adjacent former school building (Rigas Feraios). The renovation and adoption of this 1,750 m2 facility will be accomplished in two phases. The first steps (already completed) included limited work to make the premises suitable for college-level instruction. Courses began in the new rooms this past September 2021. A total of 13 classrooms with a total capacity of 300 people, can now serve the growing number of ACT’s both full-time and study-abroad foreign students. West Hall also provides several new, much-needed offices for administrative and teaching staff.

The second phase of the project will feature a complete renovation of the building, while also upgrading the surrounding area. When finished, the building will feature a new, central and unified reception area as well as a multipurpose room for up to 80 people, and serve as the administrative hub of the campus. Physical improvements will ensure that West Hall is a fully integrated component of the overall ACT campus. The facade will be upgraded with an external shell to increase energy efficiency and add a modern architectural element. An outdoor “living room” and the re-configuration of the surrounding green space will mark significant improvements to both the aesthetics and microclimate of the area, benefitting the entire campus.

Οι λέξεις δεν είναι συμπλήρωμα, “μπαλώματα”, ή αναγκαίο κακό. Είναι το δομικό στοιχείο που μπορεί να μετατρέψει την πλοήγηση σε εμπειρία -και κατ’ επέκταση, να εκπληρώσει το ζητούμενο (ενημέρωση, πώληση, κ.λπ.).

Copywriters, online content creators, designers. Ή αλλιώς, κειμενογράφους, δημιουργούς διαδικτυακού περιεχομένου, σχεδιαστές. Ή απλά, σε όποιον θέλει ν’ αποκτήσει μια σαφέστερη εικόνα για τη θέση και τη σημασία των λέξεων online.

Σημείωση

Το παρόν πρόγραμμα διδάσκεται στα ελληνικά. Οι παρουσιάσεις και το υλικό του μαθήματος ωστόσο, περιλαμβάνουν ορολογία στα αγγλικά, γι' αυτό και απαιτείται καλή γνώση της αγγλικής γλώσσας για την παρακολούθησή του.

Aναλυτική Θεματολογία

• Η αρχιτεκτονική της online πληροφορίας. Ποια είναι η διαφορά της από τα δεδομένα ή το περιεχόμενο, οι διαφορετικές δομές και κλίμακές της, πώς πρέπει να προσαρμόζεται ανάλογα με τις εκάστοτε ανάγκες, και γιατί η ιδανικά δομημένη πληροφορία είναι η “αόρατη” πληροφορία.
• Δημιουργώντας ιδανικά κείμενα και σωστά text patterns. Οι επιλογές και συνδέσεις λέξεων που θα “μιλήσουν” στο κατάλληλο κοινό, θα ορίσουν με σαφήνεια το σκοπό κάθε παραγράφου, θα δώσουν εύκολα λύση στην όποια αναζήτηση ή πρόβλημα. 
• Voice, tone, και style guide. Ο ορισμός του λεξιλογίου και η αποτύπωση μέσα από αυτό της ταυτότητας ενός brand, τα διαφορετικά “χρώματα” στην έκφραση και η πρόκληση να του τ’ αποτυπώσεις μέσα από ένα κείμενο, η σχέση του content και του context. 
• Τι είναι το conversational design; Πώς μετατρέπει ένα καλογραμμένο σύνολο λέξεων σε ένα κείμενο με το οποίο ο αναγνώστης μπορεί να ταυτιστεί και να διαδράσει; Ποια είναι τα βασικά ερωτήματα, οι απαντήσεις στα οποία το καθιστούν πρακτικό και εύχρηστο;
• Γράφοντας -από το πρώτο draft μέχρι το τελικό κείμενο. Δομώντας επιμέρους αλλά και συνολικά, προσαρμόζοντας και διορθώνοντας σε μία πορεία, πάντα με άξονα το τελικό ζητούμενο: τον σκοπό και τον στόχο αυτού που γράφουμε.

One of the ACT teams has been qualified for the final round of the Kogod Case Competition. The Case Competition is one of the premier annual events of the American University's Kogod School of Business in Washington, DC, and it attracts students from the US and all over the world.

The competition is open to all graduate and undergraduate students of the American University (AU) and invited Kogod partner schools which include the Business School of ACT– the American College of Thessaloniki. The ACT team consisted of Chloe Clancy, Daniel Lio, Asia Sanchez, Rohan Mehta, and Jai Amin, American students who were studying abroad at ACT through the NUin Program.

The competition focuses on an issue faced by an organization and participants work together to recommend solutions to the leadership team. The participants have the opportunity to sharpen their communication skills, presentation style, and problem-solving techniques.

The first round was held online in November 2021. The participants received the case study and then submitted a video pitch with their proposed recommendations. The top five teams in each division will be invited to Kogod, in Washington DC, in early February to present their full recommendations in a 10 to 15-minute presentation followed by a ten-minute Q&A before a panel of judges.

The Spring I, 2022 term at the American College of Thessaloniki has begun! This term, more than 150 students have joined the ACT Study Abroad Program from 19 colleges and universities across the United States of America. Facing severe snowstorms in the US and the worldwide COVID outbreak, these students made a significant effort to arrive in Thessaloniki this year. They are joining us through two types of programs for visiting students; the ACT Study Abroad Program and custom programs for first-year students.

The Study Abroad program at ACT is open to all individuals who apply for a semester abroad from their home schools whereas the program for first-year students is a special program that is restricted to students from a particular partner school.

Thirty students make up the spring Study Abroad cohort and are from a wide list of schools in the United States of America including the University of Iowa, Texas Tech University, Calvin University, Indiana State University, Lorain County Community College, Case Western University, College of Mount Saint Vincent, Iowa State University, American University, Michigan State University, Rutgers University, Saint Vincent College, Virginia Tech, University of Minnesota and Randolph-Macon College. 

One hundred twenty students make up the cohort of visiting first-year students at ACT from George Mason University and Northeastern University. These universities prepare the students academically and socially, starting with special courses and community building on their home campus during the first semester, and culminating the first year with a spring study abroad experience. First-year study abroad programs allow students to engage globally early on in their studies and bring back international experience into the classroom as well as build a strong portfolio of experiences for their future.

After arriving in Thessaloniki, the ACT Student Services Office provides an orientation week that included a variety of activities to help everyone settle into their new home, get to know their new classmates and the ACT Residence Life Support Staff, learn the way around their neighborhoods, take a guided tour of Thessaloniki and try their first Greek foods. Moreover, they visited ACT for a campus orientation. The week concluded with a visit to their local farmer’s market and a field trip to Vergina at the Royal Macedonian Tombs Archaeological Site. On Monday, January 10, our visiting students integrated onto the ACT campus alongside a record number of degree-seeking students to engage in academic and social endeavors that are enriched because of the diversity of our growing community.
