Dear ACT Students, Faculty and Staff, I hope that all of you had a chance to interact with Governor and Mrs. Dukakis and were as inspired by them as I was. Certainly, Mike Dukakis put in as long hours and as much plain hard work as any of the holders of ACT’s Michael S. Dukakis Chair in Public Policy and Service have during the first seven years of the chair’s existence...(read more) |

PRINCIPLES OF TOURISM CLASS VISITS GEROVASILIOU VINEYARD Chris Grammenos and his students from Management 271—Principles of Tourism (including several study abroad students) visited a privately-owned, 200-acre vineyard where carefully selected Greek and international varieties of vines flourish. at the museum of viticultural craft, then passing through the underground
cellars and ended with wine tasting in the specially designed halls of
the winery. |

BEHIND THE SCENES AT OUR "COVER LIBRARY" By now, you’ve probably noticed that the book collection of the Bissell Library has grown large enough to begin to fill the previously empty bookstacks on the second floor. While the breadth and range of our digital resources continue to expand with e-journals and e-books, the printed book collection is no less important. Recently, the library staff have undertaken two vast and detailed projects with the goals of making sure the library’s collection supports the research needs of students and faculty and that the resources are easy for all to locate. The first project, which followed the adoption of a revised collection development policy, sought to assess and analyze the collection by subject and involved determining the level of subject coverage in each division and also benchmarking with library collections in similar institutions. With this project completed, the collection growth can be targeted. | |
|
The second project, which is still in progress, consists of an inventory, thorough “shelf-reading” (making sure the books are where they should be!), checking and updating the information in the online catalogue and checking the physical condition of and labels on the books themselves. This project involves all library staff, including our dedicated student assistants, without whom it simply could not be done. You know that the library staff are there to help you with your research. Projects like these that go on “behind the scenes” also strive to ensure that the Bissell Library can provide the information resources you need and help make them easily accessible. |

INTRODUCING CHANGE On Saturday, March 10, 2007, Dr. Linda Manney gave a talk entitled “Introducing
Change: from Exams-based to Standards-based Curriculum,” at the 28th
Annual TESOL Greece Convention in central Athens. In her presentation,
Dr. Manney first presented a model of curriculum development and renewal.
She then discussed changes in the English language curriculum which she
recently introduced in the local international secondary school. Finally,
she led the audience through some representative classroom activities
from a standards-based English language program. |
FROM LEARNING DISABILITIES TO PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL DISORDERS Poppy Lampa is currently involved in a survey run by the Greek Ministry of Education regarding the evaluation of specialized centers of diagnosis and support of children with special education needs (from learning disabilities to physical and emotional disorders). The survey is in the form of questionnaires and they have already been sent to all centers in Greece. The team hopes to finish the collection of the questionnaires and the analysis of the results by late August 2007. The results will be published in a small booklet under the supervision of the Ministry of Education. |
MIGRANT WOMEN IN NORTHERN GREECE A four-member
team in the Humanities and Social Sciences division (Aigli Brouskou,
Serap
Kayatekin, Anna-Maria Konsta and Maria Kyriakidou) received
internal funding from ACT to initiate a research project regarding migrant
women in Northern Greece. Their first aim is to identify migrant women’s
organisations in the wider Thessaloniki area and contact their members
through personal
interviews. Then, they will be working documenting the presence of migrant
women and the realities of their lives in the region. The collected primary
material will be studied in the light of secondary sources by a thorough
review of relevant bibliography. The project will be interdisciplinary,
engaging anthropology, history and sociology, as well as law and political
economy,
thus drawing from the strengths of the different faculty members. The
project also has benefits for students in a variety of ways. The student
body at
ACT
is unique within the area, with representatives from all the countries
of the Balkans. This gives the College, among other things, a distinct
linguistic advantage in communicating with the immigrants. Finally, and
most importantly,
the team believes that the project should be used as a way of raising
consciousness about the plight of immigrants in general, and of female
immigrants in
particular.
To this end, they envision organizing workshops with immigrant organizations
as well as other possible activities, such as conference presentations.
This project, which should be considered a starting point, has the potential
to
raise the academic profile of ACT in Thessaloniki, as well as in the
broader region and Greece in general. |

MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNI PRESIDENT Dear Alumni Board Members of 2005 - 2007, As we approach the end of this two-year term, I would like to express a special thank to all of you, for your voluntary initiatives and work. It has been almost two years since we gathered around a table and decided to offer our time to the ACT Alumni Association. We completed the launching of the Alumni website, seven social events-- including a Homecoming, and a six times over increase in the treasury. Moreover, lobbying for recognition of degrees was top on the list of priorities. Given the opportunity now, I wish to thank you for making the vision a reality and creating a reference point for future ACT Alumni Boards. Best regards to all and lots of success for the future, Iphigenia
