From left to right, Terry Heinichin, Director of the Tippie School’s MBA for Professionals
and Managers Program, the President Mr. Richard Jackson, Executive VP Dr. Panos Kanellis,
and Business Chair and MBA Director Dr. Nick Kourkoumelis.

COOPERATION AGREEMENT WITH THE TIPPIE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

The signature ceremony for the new three-year agreement between the ACT MBA and the Tippie School of the University of Iowa took place in the president's office on February 12.

This groundbreaking agreement results in great part from the encouragement and support of Trustee John Pappajohn to both institutions.

The Tippie School, consistently ranked among the top 50 MBA programs, will cooperate with ACT on a range of activities within 10 areas itemized in the agreement. Almost immediately, results will be seen in the arrival on campus this semester of Tippie School Associate Dean Gary Gaeth, Executive Director David Hensley of the University’s John Pappajohn Entrepreneurship Center, and, during May, a group of 30 Tippie School MBA students accompanied by faculty.

DUKAKIS VISITING INTERN

During the Fall 2006 semester, ACT hosted German scholar Timo Lange as a Dukakis Visiting Intern. Mr. Lange, a German Ph.D. student, engaged in research on hiring procedures in the EU, the OSCE, and NATO. The fruit of his labor is a series of bound booklets on employment in these organizations, available now in the Office of Business Liaison and Career Services.

STUDY AT ACT AS A BORJAN TANEVSKI SCHOLAR

Another Borjan Tanevski Scholar to study at ACT will be named this year. The scholarship carries an award of 1500 euro from the Borjan Tanevski Fund and another 800 euro kindly donated by ACT alumnus Gert Peshkatari. The topic of the 2007 competition is "Foreign Direct Investment: Curse or Blessing" (submission date was February 20th). The winner and selected other authors will present their papers at an international student conference in Skopje in May. Inquiries should be addressed to Dr. Vincent Mueller.

STUDENT INITIATIVE LEADS TO QUICK ACTION

Late last year, students from Nenad Sebek’s Politics 235 class (Civil Society in SE Europe) initiated an effort to make ACT’s campus more safely accessible, especially for people with disabilities. The class goal was to improve our immediate surroundings through a civil society project. The 6 students, led by Chris Sfetsios, suggested that improvements be made to help make access to the campus easier for disabled individuals. More specifically, they pointed to the need for a railing on the stairs leading from the south to the north campus (behind Stephens Hall). The need for such railing had been recognized before, but this initiative presented the administration with a clear opportunity to act.

A petition requesting the railing was signed by 150 people on campus and the Student Government granted its support. ACT’s administration was very open to the idea and with the invaluable help of Anatolia’s buildings and grounds crew, the railing was up in no time. ACT welcomed students into the spring semester with the railing in place. Happy about the speedy response and effective solution, Chris Sfetsios says “Greece does not have a great record on dealing with disability issues, so ACT has a unique opportunity to serve as a positive and progressive example.

Congratulations to the students involved, ACT’s administration and crew on this effort to make ACT a safer and more accessible campus.

MOODLE? WHAT'S A MOODLE?

NITLE encourages faculty members to find out!

Moodle is a course management system (CMS) like Blackboard. However, unlike Blackboard, Moodle is a free, Open Source software package although it too claims to have been designed using sound pedagogical principles to help educators create effective online learning communities.

NITLE (National Institute for Technology and Liberal Education) has created a Moodle Exchange which is a collaborative user community focused on the use of Moodle in liberal educational contexts

The Exchange allows Moodle-using or Moodle-interested campuses to share strategies and ask and answer questions about implementation, evaluation, migration, customization, and other topics, sharing ideas and best practices and exchanging assistance with troubleshooting technical or use issues.

Any Moodle-related topic may be discussed at the Exchange but NITLE is especially interested in these three topics at this time:

Moodle newbies: evaluating, migrating to and/or getting started with Moodle
Showcase Moodle courses: share innovative uses and strategies
Collaborative Moodle development: customizing, integrating, and developing Moodle capabilities

Read more at NITLE, or go directly to the Exchange. Once there, if you do not already have an account on the NITLE Moodle, please take a minute to create one. Questions about the NITLE Moodle Exchange may be directed to David Barber, the Exchange facilitator.

ACT is a member of NITLE and is participating in a feasibility study on multi-point videoconferencing (see the last issue of ACT Vision). The study is using Moodle for support materials. Dr. Panos Vlachos is coordinating ACT’s participation in the study and Library Director Karen Bohrer is the NITLE campus liaison.

BLACKBOARD UPGRADE AND TRAINING SESSIONS

The upgrade from Blackboard 6.0 to Blackboard 7.1 has been completed successfully. A workshop that was held on Feb. 8th was very well attended by faculty from all divisions. During the 1 ½-hour session, faculty members had the opportunity to become acquainted with all the new features and improvements in version 7.1. A second workshop is being scheduled for faculty members who have no experience with using Blackboard. More information, including the exact date and time, will be provided shortly.

ONCE AGAIN, A RECORD NUMBER OF U.S. STUDY ABROAD STUDENTS AT ACT

It seems to be a streak of some kind: another semester, another record. This spring, 84 students from 30 colleges and universities across the U.S. are attending ACT. Coming from UCLA to Boston College, from University of South Florida to University of Utah, they'll  definitely enrich the learning environment at ACT. We trust that all of you will greet them warmly and make them feel right at home!

These students participated in a 3-day Orientation February 7-9. On February 9th, they visited the Royal Tombs at Vergina, escorted by Manolis Maou and Stepan Partemian. Upon their return to Thessaloniki, they were given a short  tour around the city. A brief stop by the "Old Town" gave them the chance to see the city from above (sea, port, Aristotle University campus, International Fair, soccer stadiums, etc.). The full day ended with a visit to the church of Saint Demetrios.

Chairs' Corner

Dr. Nikos Kourkoumelis
Chair, Business Division, nikolaos@act.edu

The new semester began on a very high note with a visit by, Dr. Terry Heinichen, the Director, MBA for Professionals and Managers program at the Tippie School of Management, at the University of Iowa. Dr. Heinichen brought with her an extensive cooperation agreement, which was signed on Monday, February 12th, in President Jackson's office. The agreement, between the Anatolia School of Business at the American College of Thessaloniki and the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa, includes the exchange of students and faculty, joint research projects and conferences, Ph.D. programs for our faculty, study abroad programs, guest lectures, and the promotion of the entrepreneurial curiculum. The business division is excited about all the possible synergies between the two schools. In addition, the Dean of Sabanci University, Dr. Nakiye Boyacigiller, will visit us on Monday, March 12th. She will address our MBA class and we will discuss potential cooperation agreements between our schools. These terrific opportunities go a long way in enriching the learning experience of our students.
Dr. David Wisner
Chair, HSS Division, drd@act.edu

I had a rather pleasant surprise a little over a year ago. I received an email message from an unknown pair of colleagues in Germany who were frantically searching for me to invite me to a conference more or less in honor of a book I had published way back in 1997 (the conference will take place in May 2007). All of us who engage in research and endeavor to publish our findings hope for the day that we are the objects of such recognition. I have to admit nonetheless that I was a little surprised that anyone would be reading my book ten years later.

Regardless, thanks to the emphasis our senior administration is now placing on the college's research profile, I believe that such accomplishments will be more and more common at ACT. What better moment to introduce the larger ACT community (alumni and students especially) to the types of research some of our faculty are currently undertaking...(read more)
