Thessaloniki Becomes a Recycle Monster!

Through a weekend of environmental fun, education, entertainment and activity, Recycle Monster crashed flamboyantly onto the Thessaloniki scene on May 8-9, 2010, promoting its message of environmental responsibility and action.

The student-led initiative was organized under the auspices of the American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) and the Center for Democracy and Reconciliation in Southeast Europe and started as a project of a politics course in civil society. A core group of ACT students and alumni conceived and implemented the project as interns ACT’s Michael S. Dukakis Chair in Public Policy and Service.

The event called “Don’t Throw It, Show It” was the first event of the “Recycle Monster” initiative and proved that civil society can, and do care about the environment, their community and the future of their city.  Students, professionals, small businesses, artists, private and public schools, the municipality and the public services for the environment all came together, volunteered their time, money and expertise and cooperated towards producing a successful weekend of fun, activity, participation and information.

With a recycled fashion show, competitions for children to create art out of refuse, a recycle dance, art and craft workshops, a live art construction and a centerpiece consisting of an entire “living room” made out of rubbish, the educational event provided not only knowledge, but also entertainment for all ages of visitors.

Recycle Monster is continuing to work with schools, young people and with the municipal departments, to make this initiative an annual municipal event.
