The Michael S. Dukakis Chair in Public Policy and Service at the American College of Thessaloniki was inaugurated in 1999. It has since become a leading forum in Northern Greece and the Balkans for discussion and debate of the pressing issues of our times, with a principal view toward motivating young people to become involved in public service.
Under the auspices of the Dukakis Chair, ACT has organized numerous public events featuring such prominent public figures as Alvaro de Soto, Nicholas Burns, Nikiforos Diamandouros, Edi Rama, HM Simeon of Bulgaria, and many others. Topics have ranged from US foreign policy, EU and NATO enlargement, sustainable development and corporate responsibility, and historical remembrance.
Many visitors reside on campus for variable periods of between five days and three weeks as Dukakis Fellows, delivering formal lectures, visiting class sessions, conducting master classes, and in general interacting with the ACT community. During the 2007-08 academic year ACT hosted as Dukakis Fellows Ambassador Geert-Hinrich Ahrens, Ambassador Michael Einik, author Thea Halo, and senior retired US diplomat Marten van Heuven.
