Message from the President

Dear ACT Students and Faculty,

Just as the weather is turning beautiful on campus with almond blossoms and promise of spring, I am off on an extended one month US trip which will take me to Palm Beach March 8-13, Boston March 13-17, Chicago March 17-20, San Francisco March 20-22, Los Angeles March 22-24, New York March 24-27, ending in Washington March 27 – April 1. The purpose will be outreach and fundraising for Anatolia and ACT. Thus, as you begin to think about Chalkidiki and beaches, you can picture me in Chicago and snow.
I will get back just in time for the conference here on campus Saturday, April 4 as part of the ACT Institute for Management and Leadership. It will bring together Mr. Fred Senn, founding partner of the Fallon Agency, one of the most respected US advertising agencies and senior reps from leading international firms represented in Greece. For those of you interested in advertising and marketing, this is a must, and I’d recommend that you look over Fred Senn’s book “Juicing the Orange”, copies of which are in the Bissell Library.

On the same day, April 4, we will also be introducing, in partnership with the prestigious Michigan State University, the first MSU English Language Competency Examination in Greece. The exam will be offered on campus and at other locations in Northern Greece and any of you interested in learning more should contact Rodney Coules at extension 372.

I was very pleased to have lunch before leaving with the 87 American study abroad students now on campus for the Spring Semester. They appear off to an excellent start, and I hope that all ACT students will have a chance to meet them individually and contribute to their experience in Greece.

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on my return to campus after April 2.

Sincerely,
Richard Jackson

MEET THE NEW ANATOLIA LIBRARY DIRECTOR

Anatolia Library Director Teresa Grenot arrived at Anatolia from Los Angeles in September 2008. She heads the Bissell and Eleftheriades Libraries and library staffs. She holds a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from the University of California, Los Angeles, and conducted her doctoral studies in Educational Technology at Pepperdine University, also in California. Dr. Grenot and the Bissell Library staff work closely with ACT students and faculty to provide 21st century library resources, access, and services.

TWO NEW BISSELL LIBRARY MOODLE MODULES

Two new Bissell Library Moodle modules are now available to current ACT students and staff on our ACT Moodle course management system website. They feature information about library resources and services. There you can also see the latest library brochure listing our resources, hours, and alumni and membership information. The Bissell Library Information Literacy Moodle module in spring 2009 will support an eight-week ACT course called Library Information Literacy, taught in collaboration with English 101.

BISSELL LIBRARY FEATURED AT THE GOETHE INSTITUTE

In December 2008, the Bissell Library was featured at the grand opening in Thessaloniki of Library Architecture: From Vision to Reality, a conference sponsored by the Goethe Institute’s Committee for the Support of Libraries.  Anatolia Library Director Teresa Grenot and Bissell librarian Stella Asderi presented at the conference and shared with the audience information about ACT, Anatolia, and the Bissell Library. Professor Emmanuel Maou of  ACT’s Multimedia Department presented a Flash presentation highlighting the architectural features of the Bissell Library to over 100 conference attendees, including students, librarians, and library directors from Greece and Germany.  The ACT Marketing Department provided refreshments, information, and brochures on the Bissell Library and ACT.  At our invitation, Anatolia alumnus and award-winning Bissell Library architect Petros Makridis attended the presentation.

OTHER BISSELL LIBRARY NEWS...

In fall 2008, the Bissell Library was “home away from home” for Northeastern University in Greece (NUIn) students and program staff. Several NUIn students also selected the Bissell Library for their community service program hours and assisted our library staff with assigned projects. We enjoyed providing this learning opportunity to students and collaborating with NUIn staff.

The Bissell Library participated in the international ACT, NITLE, CLAC & Oberlin Group Webinar Videoconference—Campus Cost Cutting Measures: What Can We Do?—in December 2008. It was held in the Stavros Niarchos Teleconference Center. Bissell Library’s participation made this an international Webinar. Bissell participated online with academic libraries in the United States, including Carlton College, Gettysburg, Gustavus, Millsaps, Smith, Swarthmore, the University of Puget Sound, and Vassar. The timely discussion focused on helping institutions cut costs in the near term.

Our congratulations and thanks to Bissell Library administrative assistant Liza Vachtsevanou for her excellent work locating and scanning historical photographs for the re-publication of the book The Morning Cometh: 45 Years with Anatolia College, Supplemented by Carl Compton’s UNRRA Letters to his Wife Ruth, by Carl Compton. Ms. Vachtsevanou is noted in the acknowledgements.

ELECTION FEVER AT ACT!

True to form, students and faculty at the American College were enthusiastic about, if not actively involved in, the 2008 US Presidential Election.

Senior Kristin Harms caucused for Barack Obama in Iowa last January, in what was the beginning of the President’s successful campaign to gain the nomination of the Democratic Party. (Kristin tells us that a fellow Iowan who spent the fall 2007 semester as a study abroad student at ACT caucused actively for Hillary Clinton.)...(read more)

FIELD TRIPS

Mt. Olympus (Oct. 4-5, 2008)
The attempt to reach Mytikas, the summit of Mt. Olympus, was not successful.  Because of fog and an early snowfall, the paths above 2.700m were closed. Despite the difficulties, 35 of the group reached Skala. They all had a great time.  And for many of them, it was the experience of a lifetime.

Pilio, Makrynitsa (Oct. 11-12, 2008)
It was a relaxing and enjoyable trip to the village of Makrynitsa. Students learned about the traditions and culture of that famous region.

Meteora (Nov. 1-2, 2008)
Students took in breathtaking views while visiting the famous rock monasteries of Meteora.

WRITING INITIATIVE

A new initiative focusing on undergraduate students was launched at the end of January. The aim of the initiative is to enable ACT students to complete successfully the thesis requirement of their revised academic programs. Faculty from all divisions will work with the Writing Initiative Coordinator to revise syllabi to include more opportunities for students to write.

DISCO GLAMHOUSE CHRISTMAS PARTY@ REMVI

This year's pre-Christmas party was jointly organized by the Alumni Association and student government and held on December 21 at REMVI Bar/Club Restaurant. To our surprise, Remvi hosted a glamhouse party the same night, with resident English DJ Seamus Haji gracing the decks, turning the night into a special glamhouse party for our guests. Alumni, students, and friends enjoyed Haji's music until the morning hours. Chivas was our sponsor for the night.

The Alumni Board wishes all members of the Anatolia community a happy New Year, full of health, happiness, and fulfillment, as well as professional productivity and success! For our part, this is another year of hard work to enhance ACT's and, by consequence,
Anatolia's identity. Our aim is to promote the Anatolia brand among the general public, bringing more members into our community.

We remain ACTively connected!
