A VISIT FROM A COLLEAGUE
Livia Piotto, reference librarian at the Frohring Library of John Cabot University in Rome, spent the week of March 17-22, 2008 here at ACT thanks to AMICAL’s Small Grant Program which seeks to support professional development opportunities for its members. Ms. Piotto was especially interested in ACT’s Information Literacy program and the various levels of research skills taught by the Bissell Library staff. She was able to attend an Information Literacy class and spent time “shadowing” the librarians to learn about using different business information resources and the various services the Bissell Library provides. In turn, Ms. Piotto was able to assist ACT staff in launching its “Ask a librarian” service (see above) and helped us work through some issues with the Horizon system, which the Frohring Library also uses. AMICAL is the American International Consortium of Academic Libraries and facilitating exchange of ideas and expertise among its members is one of the consortium’s major goals. In that regard, Ms. Piotto’s visit to the Bissell Library certainly benefited the librarians at both institutions.

Our teams proved to be weak compared to the others, as we had the smallest
number of students per institution, while others have between four and five
thousand students overall.
Everybody left with vows for better results in our tournament in May. |

MAKRYNITSA-PILIO
FIELD TRIP
A weekend in Pilio was a good reason for 30 ACT students to go to Makrynitsa, a village with a great view over the Pagasitikos Gulf and the city of Volos. They had a great time visiting interesting places (Folklore Museum in Makrynitsa, Archaeological Museum in Volos and a park with a contemporary sculpture exhibition in Volos). Local tavernas hosted them with traditional food and local “tsipouro”. |

ACT STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION TRIP TO CONSTANTINOPLE (ISTABUL) The trip to Constantinople organized by the SGA started on the 22nd of March. After spending 10 hours on the bus, the students arrived at their final destination. 75 ACT. students had the opportunity to visit Aghia Sofia, the Blue Mosque and the Byzantine Hippodrome on their very first foray into the city. The difference in the culture was very obvious when the students met the famous “chanoumakia” (belly dancers) during a night exodus. The next day was spent cruising the Bosphorus, in order to see the whole gulf and Constantinouple from the sea side. One could see the two sides of the city, both European and Asian, and the bridges which unite those two continents. After this wonderfull cruise the next stop was in the market of Kapali Tsarsi which has more than 4000 little shops. Loaded down with shopping bags, the entourage went back to the hotel to prepare for the restaurants of Koup Kapi. After finishing dinner the “pilgrims” had one more battle with entertainment in a night club of the city. Unfortunately the days in Constantinople had finished and after a stop to the “Patriarchate” (“The Vatican of the Orthodox Church”), the group was on its way back to Thessaloniki. Leaving Constantinople and following a stop at Redestos for lunch, the weary travellers finally reached ACT at 4.30 am on March 26! |

JONATHAN
NESHENA Some people might have many questions concerning how, why and when I came to ACT. I am hereby writing this in an attempt to address some, if not all, of the questions. However, I hope to cover all of them. Initially,
I applied to Cornell College and Drury University in the States. Drury
University said that my “proof of finance” was far below the minimum
required. As they do not offer full scholarships, or anything close to
it, I was not an eligible candidate for this school. |
