The roster of Dukakis lecturers continues to grow. In December, ACT hosted two events featuring prominent scholars from within the Greek university community. First, on December 3rd, Ioannis Stefanidis of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki lectured on “Political Culture and Anti-Americanism in Greece.” The lecture was based on material from Professor Stefanidis’ recently published book on Greek foreign policy.

ACT then welcomed University of Athens Professor Kostas Ifantis for a Dukakis lecture on “Innovation and Rationalization in Greek Foreign Policy” on December 13th. In addition to teaching international relations at the University of Athens, Dr. Ifantis is also Director of the Hellenic Center for European Studies, a research institute based in the Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

3RD MBA STUDENT FORUM

“The MBA Student Forum” is a concept that was created in 2002 by TITAN Cement Company in order to foster a dialogue between MBA students and representatives of the academic and business communities to enhance the knowledge of upcoming executives.

This year's event took place on Friday, November 30th at the facilities of the TITAN factory in Efkarpia, Thessaloniki.

The subjects discussed were:

1. The International Career: Opportunities and Challenges.
2. The Work/Life Balance.

The conference was composed of two sessions of about 90 minutes each. The panel consisted of two professors, in the role of coordinators, and four representatives from the business community. During the break, a light lunch was offered, as well as a tour of the factory’s modern technological facilities.

Along with ACT’s MBA students and graduates, other groups of MBA students from Greek universities participated.

ACT is preparing to welcome the largest ever cohort of Study Abroad students this coming spring. Christa Ayoub, our US enrolment director, already has 97 applications on hand! Our spring visitors hail from over 30 colleges and universities from all over the US. The biggest “exporter” of study abroad students this coming semester is Northeastern University, with Boston College a close second and 17 students are coming from the various colleges and universities in the CUNY system. Notable also is the fact that ACT's study abroad program now draws from almost every corner of the US, from Massachusetts to California and from Florida to Colorado and North Dakota.

My major is:

LINA VANIDIS '00
An advertising account manager talks about Philosophy classes, the industry where everyone’s an expert, and choosing your field of work.

Lina Vanidis graduated from ACT in June 2000. Although she was a Business Administration major, the classes she remembers most vividly are Philosophy 101 with Dr. Panos Raftopoulos and Philosophy 102 with Donald Hanover. “Both courses, completely irrelevant to my major, proved to be more than challenging and surprisingly exciting. Being used to taking classes that were directly relevant to Business Administration, these 2 subjects were quite a revelation.”...

THIS IS MY COUNTRY ZIMBABWE
by Jonathan Neshena

In his first entry, regular student contributor Jonathan Neshena introduces us to his homeland...

In the historical ashes of what is popularly known as Rhodesia, today stands the geographically magnificent and multicultural Zimbabwe. Located in the southern part of Africa, Zimbabwe is a landlocked country with its fairly flat land stretching from the fertile Zambezi to the infertile Limpopo rivers. To the south, it  borders on South Africa, to the southeast , on Botswana, to its northwest lies Zambia, and coastal Mozambique marks its eastern borders.  The entire magnitude of this country can only be grasped if we talk about its politics, economics, culture, and its tourist attractions.

After several unsuccessful attempts to rise up against  colonial rule from the 1890s, Zimbabwe finally became independent on the 18th of April 1980. This day marked a major transformation from what was once called Rhodesia to present day Zimbabwe...(read more)

Alumni Association News

Dear Alumni,

As a president of the ACT Alumni Association for my third term (ending May of 2009), I am proud to say that the end of the year 2007 finds the Alumni Association at an excellent shape, with its board members working closely as a team, hard as usual but more effectively than ever. Allow me to present some achievements of the Alumni Board:

During 2007, the Association for its first time was in position to make a significant donation to ACT. The choice of the donation was weighted towards giving a technologically sophisticated tool useful for all ACT students: a smart-board. The fund for this donation was raised by your financial contributions during the social events and by tight budgeting control and allocation of sponsors for all necessary expenses of the association.

Social events are successful as usual, but with such a high and solid participation from you that we are able to negotiate for better deals both with the sponsors and the bar owners, for achieving the prestige ACT alumni deserve and for collecting financial benefits. Keeping this recipe for success, I am sure more donations will follow.

Electronically speaking, the www.actalumni.gr website is under major re-engineering to make it even more interactive for you, while the Facebook profile of the Association, which started as a test, reached 105 members within 9 days, without the slightest advertisement! The number is growing day by day, although this is the first time we’re talking about it publicly…

Regarding our recognition-related efforts, board members and more specifically Vice President, Keimis Kryonas, keep observing and analyzing the Greek and international political environment, looking for and taking advantage of the best opportunities to send information to key decision makers about the value of ACT education. Many of you call us or send us messages asking for your professional rights and the possible scenarios for the recognition of our degrees by the Greek state. We are here to help and inform you about latest developments.

However, the most moving aspect of the latest association’s achievements is your active part in them. More and more of you are contacting board members and volunteering and making inquiries about how to financially contribute to the Association. More and more of you, actually contribute with the 20€ annual membership fee, during events and through the Association’s bank accounts. All these actions, make the board members understand that we have made a difference in your eyes and that you do see the added value of the Association. And this is exactly what makes us keep on walking and doing all the hard and un-glamorous work for you, in advance of the impressive results. Thank you all, and may all your goals succeed, soon. See you electronically or at the next event,

Iphigenia Paparoussi, ‘93
