TOP NEUTROGENA EXECUTIVE LEELA GRAMMENIDOU PETRAKIS LECTURES ON THE BUSINESS OF BEAUTY

Top cosmetics industry executive Leela Grammenidou Petrakis (AC ’81, ACT ’87) returned to her alma mater November 8, to speak about “Driving Growth and New Product Development in a Crowded Marketplace: From Idea to Launch.” Ms. Petrakis is General Manager of Neutrogena Cosmetics U.S., a division of Johnson & Johnson Beauty Care, and directly oversees all aspects of the brand’s sales and marketing in North America.

Leela Petrakis attended ACT in the mid-80s (when it was a two-year college) and received her B.S. degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before going on to graduate studies in Marketing and International Business at NYU’s Stern School of Business. She got her start in cosmetics by managing a Body Shop franchise in Greece and also distributed European fragrances and toiletries to beauty boutiques and department stores. Prior to joining Johnson & Johnson, Petrakis held positions of increasing responsibility at major cosmetics companies such as Clairol, Avon, Revlon, L’Oreal and Maybelline. She knows the 64 billion dollar beauty industry inside out.

Ms. Petrakis did not disappoint the overflow audience at ACT’s Niarchos Technology Center. She spoke eloquently and demonstrated an in depth knowledge of the fiercely competitive cosmetics industry and marketing and new product development. She set the stage for her talk by saying that women were “crazy about beauty.” She asked the audience what product 97% of women take with them when they leave home. The student who answered correctly (“a lip-care product”) was rewarded with a sample of Neutrogena Mineral Sheers tossed from the podium. Many more hands were raised for the next question: teachers, take note!

Petrakis went on to survey the American beauty business and Neutrogena’s relatively new place in it. What sets her brand apart, she said, was that it stands behind its products and the claims made for them, which is why it is the number one brand recommended by dermatologists, as summed up in the Neutrogena slogan: “Beautiful. Beneficial.”

Taking Mineral Sheers as an example (a foundation make-up with a base of finely ground, very pure minerals), she outlined the stages of the product cycle, from the crucible of innovation to the various phases of placing and supporting the product in the marketplace. She stressed the importance of cross-functional partnerships within the extended team responsible for the product, from testing to manufacturing to packaging, advertising, and tracking. She also showed how Neutrogena had successfully launched a “viral” internet marketing campaign for the blush version of Mineral Sheers, with user-generated content built around “blushing moments.”

Only a few members of the audience went home with beauty products, but everyone took away a powerful lesson in product development and marketing, from a living example of where an education at Anatolia and ACT can lead.

THE WRITING CENTER

The Writing Center has started up dynamically this Fall with a team of 12 peer tutors offering their assistance to our students here at ACT. Eight of our tutors are currently study abroad students who are volunteering their time. This semester these tutors will also have the option of doing an internship.

REGISTRATION FOR SPRING 2008

Registration for the Spring 2008 semester will take place between Wednesday, December 12, and Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at the Registrar’s Office on the ground floor of the New Building. Registration will take place daily between 9:30am and 3:00pm. Pre-registration advising will take place between Wednesday, December 5th and Tuesday, December 11th The Spring 2008 Schedule of Classes will be released on Tuesday, December 4th .

Here’s a short list of important steps to be followed in order to make registration as frustration-less as possible:

  • Students are registered according to (1) total credit hours earned and (2) the order assigned by a computerized lottery system. Registration order and appointments are posted on bulletin boards in the New Building.
  • All students (except seniors with 92 earned credits or more) MUST see their advisors prior to registering. You WILL NOT be able to register without your advisor’s signature on your registration form. Pre-registration academic advising begins on Wednesday, December 5, 2007.
  • Students having any outstanding financial obligations will be directed by their advisors to drop by the Registrar’s Office (ground floor, New Building). You WILL NOT be able to register unless you are cleared by the appropriate administrative personnel in that office.
  • Registration forms should be brought by students to the Registrar’s Office (ground floor, New Building), on the day and time at which their registration has been scheduled. Registration schedules will be posted on bulletin boards on the ground floor of the New Building. However, the student registering for the working student must present a statement from the latter’s employer as well as his/her validated Student ID, to the Registrar. Students who miss their appointment on the specified day and hour will lose their priority and will complete their registration at the end of the entire procedure after all other students have registered.

STUDY ABROAD STUDENTS TRAVEL TO ATHENS
November 9-11, 2007

The Fall 2007 Study Abroad students visited Athens, November 9-11, 2007. The three-day trip had a full program involving sightseeing, excursions, visiting museums and archaeological sites, and dinner at a restaurant with traditional music.

The group of 45 students departed on Friday morning at 10:00am and arrived in Athens in the afternoon where they had free time in Glyfada. The next day, a day with strong winds and occasional rain, the students visited the Athens Archaeological Museum followed by a visit to the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio. The view was amazing! Due to the weather, the sea was incredible with huge waves and shining water.

At night, a visit to a Greek “taverna” with traditional music (“rebetiko”) and good wine gave everybody a chance to practice their Greek dancing skills.
The last day (Sunday) began with the parade and the changing of the guards in Syntagma Square and the visit to the Acropolis. After a walk through the ancient “Agora” with the guide, the bus finally made its way back to Thessaloniki. With a last stop for lunch in Kifisia, all got back to Thessaloniki tired but with the best memories and a desire to visit Athens again.

SPECIAL MBA ANNOUNCEMENT
MBA Representative

Mr. Argiris Hatziemmanouil (MBA ’05) will act as MBA Representative, the special liaison between the Alumni Board and MBA graduates.

A note from Argiris:

Dear MBA mates,

Fortunately ACT gave us lots of nice memories, good skills and exceptional knowledge. In my opinion, of equal importance are the wonderful relationships we developed and the friendships created during our MBA years. In order to keep this spirit and a special contact with each other, the Alumni Board asked me to be the connection between the Board and you, the MBA alumni.

Efforts towards keeping the bonding between us and, I hope, make it even stronger have already started. Soon, I or Mrs. Christina Vogiatzi (MBA ’06), another volunteer, will get in touch with each and every one of you, to inform you about events, learn your opinions, keep in touch with you and update your professional and personal contact data for the Alumni Career Network Project. The goal is to help each other by creating a network of extremely capable, well-educated friends, graduates and professionals.

I am sure you will support this attempt and help the Alumni Association, ACT and our MBA Community to meet with success while providing you with fun, happiness and fulfilment.

Feel free to contact me for anything you may want concerning MBA Alumni and upcoming events.

Your kind assistance in our effort is also very welcome.

Kind Regards,

Master classes: a new form of instruction at ACT

One may have noticed a relative proliferation of a new type of event on campus over the past few semesters. Select Dukakis lecturers have have conducted "master classes" in international diplomacy for select senior ACT students in all three divisions.

ACT hosted its first master class when UN Under-Secretary-General Alvaro de Soto visited in June 2003. A group of 24 students from ACT and the University of Macedonia were invited to a two-hour closed session with Ambassador de Soto to discuss aspects of contemporary international relations, using case studies from de Soto's own career as a point of departure. Since then ACT has organized several other such sessions, featuring John Brady Kiesling, Geert Ahrens, Michael Einik, and Michael Dukakis himself.

The basic idea behind a master class (borrowed from a standard practice in the different fine arts), is for a senior practitioner (or performer) to conduct a hands on session on advanced topics. When Governor Dukakis conducted his master class, he asked the 20 students in attendance to imagine that they were on the staff of Minister Bakoyanni and had been asked to formulate a strategy for a specific aspect of Greek foreign policy. The students were given a deadline and encouraged to work together to formulate policy, thus simulating a situation many will confront in their professional lives.

The Dukakis Master Class series has slowly become an integral part of both the Dukakis Chair and the instruction mix for IR students at ACT. Thanks to the generous support of Governor Dukakis and of the Anatolia Board of Trustees, ACT is thus able to offer yet another unique service to its students.

About 8 months after graduating, Dusko Ugrinoski had it all figured out. After all, it was bound to happen; both of his parents are entrepreneurs and the genetic setup was in place. The only question was whether to follow in their footsteps or choose his own path. “I decided to go my own way. I didn’t want to put myself in a position where their thinking would influence my decisions.”...

LETTERS TO DR. WISNER

From Alumna Nicole Morgret, Class of 2007

Hello, Dr Wisner,

How are you doing? I'm well. I'm currently interning at the Heritage Foundation, doing research for their foreign policy analysts, mostly just looking for information from periodicals about topics like the situation in Burma, but I'm also doing a longer term project on public diplomacy during the Cold War. There are also many interesting events and speakers there as well.

From Alumna Alexandra Pentaraki, Class of 2001

Dear Dr. Wisner,

I was hoping you could write a few words for ACT Vision about an award that I received for my PhD research. Specifically, I received a YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD to attend the 4th Biennial Winter Workshop on Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder in Montreux, Switzerland, February 3-7, 2008 and present my research on "Theory of mind and neuropsychological function as potential endophenotypes ofschizophrenia". This event is an international conference that attracts experts from around the world. It is a great honor for me and I thought I’d share this with the ACT community!

“THELO SMART BOARD”
Donation Event

Submitted by Ms. Eliza Salpisti (’02), General. Secretary of the Alumni Board

The Alumni Association celebrated with students, alumni, faculty, administration and event sponsors, its first donation to ACT on October 1, 2007. The event was held on campus with the kind “mega” sponsorship of WIND.

The decision on the item to donate was based on making a contribution of the kind that would further enhance ACT’s continuous excellence in education. So, the alumni donated a SMART BOARD, which is a revolutionary education tool that transforms a traditional teaching board into a “computer board,” offering a wide range of teaching facilities to both the professor utilizing it as well as to the students in the classroom or audience at the lecture.

The “Thelo Smart Board” event was initiated with welcome speeches by the President of the Board, Mrs. Iphigenia Paparoussi (’93) and the President of Anatolia/ACT, Mr. Richard Jackson, followed by Dr. Panos Vlachos’ Smart Board presentation to guests and private demonstration to alumni board members. Association membership provided an opportunity to win a spa weekend for two at the Porto Carras Grand Resort in a lottery. The winner was Ms. Eliza Salpisti (’02) holding membership ID card No.1, chosen by WIND’s delegation. Guests wore the now famous Thelo T-shirts especially designed for that day.

The Alumni Association wishes to thank WIND for its kind sponsorship. Also, a warm thank you for their continuous support is due to Haitoglou Bros SA, Porto Carras Grand Resort, Tsantalis SA, Pepsico, Interattica DPD courier services, Kretagora Thermis, ACT, and finally our communication sponsors, Makedonia newspaper & Epiloges magazine.

Alumni Association board members owe a special thank you to alumni and friends of the Association who made this donation a reality by responding to calls for an active ACT alumni body, strengthening ties between alumni and enhancing both social and professional networks, while substantially contributing to ACT’s further development...read more
