DR. BALAKIAN'S LECTURE ON ARSHILE GORKY

Dr. Peter Balakian, renowned author and Professor of Humanities at Colgate University of New York, presented a lecture titled “Arshile Gorky: From the Armenian Genocide to the Avant-garde” at the Byzantine Museum of Thessaloniki, on October 2, 2007. Dr. Balakian’s visit was organized under the auspices of the Michael S. Dukakis Chair in Public Policy and Service at the American College of Thessaloniki, the university division of Anatolia, in cooperation with Anatolia College and the Armenian Cultural Association “Hamaskain”.

Discussing Gorky’s works, Dr. Balakian suggested that to fully comprehend Gorky, one has to understand the Armenian cultural tradition from which he had emerged and his experience as an Armenian Genocide survivor. “For all the explication and praise from critics, the paintings had been seen through a lens of formalist critique that belonged to the narrowly aesthetic disposition of modernist critical practice. One cannot imagine writing about the poet and Holocaust survivor Paul Celan without noting his ordeal with the Holocaust; nor would one write about Picasso’s “Guernica” without situating the painting in the context of the Spanish Civil War, and so on.”
Dr. Balakian is the award winning author of ‘The Burning Tigris’ and ‘Black Dog of Fate’ and is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship.

"My expectations of GCP were definitely met; I would not change a thing about the program. Everything from the pre-week assignments to our final presentation in Greece went very well for my group and me..."(Read more about the students' own experience)

GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS PRACTICUM (GCP 2007)
Submitted by Chris Grammenos

It has been more than five years since the American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) adopted this course as part of its business curriculum. It has been an overwhelming success for all participants, the students from ACT and Ohio University, the participating companies and the faculty.

There is common belief among all participants that the GCP is the best real world preparation any student can get for competing in the global economy. Mixing students from different cultures and disciplines makes the program stronger. Their assignments present a unique opportunity for dealing with real business problems, confidence in working with multinational teammates and learning from experience.

Students learn to find their way in the business environment. They encounter work habit differences, ethical differences and project management challenges. It is our experience that completion of this program puts a highlight on the resumes of these students that will impress any prospective employer that competes in the international business arena.

Many prestigious business organizations showed their support for the program by giving the opportunity to the students to develop leadership, teamwork and interpersonal skills.

We are grateful to all those organizations for their continuous support of this very successful program and we are looking forward to the next GCP in 2008:

1. EKDOTIKI. AE (AGELIOFOROS)
2. HYATT REGENCY THESSALONIKI
3. SARAH LAWRENCE
4. HARTEL

7. MCDONALDS

TEFL PROGRAM REPRESENTED AT THE 20TH ANNUAL PALSO BOOK EXHIBIT

On Tuesday, August 28, 2007, Mr. Rodney Coules and Dr. Linda Manney of the American College of Thessaloniki (ACT) TEFL Program gave a presentation to the Panhellenic Federation of Language School Owners at the 20th Annual PALSO Book Exhibit, Macedonia Palace, Thessaloniki. Their presentation, entitled “Harry Potter meets Artemis Fowl: Adolescent Heroes in the ACT TEFL Program,” featured a hands-on demonstration of innovative classroom activities which use contemporary children’s literature in teaching English language skills to adolescent learners.

Mr. Coules and Dr. Manney began their presentation by describing the two teacher training courses currently being offered in the ACT TEFL Programs, the 30-hour basic methodology course, and the 50-hour advanced methodology course. Next, Mr. Coules involved the audience in some engaging language activities which were designed around passages from the popular children’s book The Golden Compass, by Philip Pullman, while Dr. Manney led the audience through passages from the second Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, by J.K. Rowling. Mr. Coules and Dr. Manney also provided guidelines for selecting passages from English language children’s books a teacher can use with students of varying levels of language proficiency, and they explained their rationale for designing a wide range of language activities around these passages. It should be noted that both Mr. Coules and Dr. Manney use children’s literature regularly in their own English language classes, and they also show participants in the ACT TEFL Programs a number of methods for using children’s literature creatively in the English language classroom.

The introductory TEFL course is being offered November 21-December 2, while the advanced course will run March 19-April 13, 2008. For more information on the TEFL Program, please e-mail the Admissions Office at Admissions, or visit the TEFL page on the ACT website.

The day started in “Ormos Panagias” on a cruise to visit the monasteries of Mt. Athos. After a 2-hour stop for lunch in Ouranoupoli, the group settled in a hotel next to one of the most beautiful beaches in the area. For the next 24 hours, everyone enjoyed the sun, the pool and the sea. A Saturday night visit to Neos Marmaras for dinner and drinks “sealed” a memorable weekend.

STUDY ABROAD STUDENTS IN VERGINA

On September 21st, the study abroad students visited the royal tombs of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great in Vergina (Aiges). The visit was followed by lunch and the group returned to Thessaloniki for a tour of the city and a visit of the Aghios Demetrios church and its crypt. CHANGES IN THE MARKETING DEPARTMENT

Over two years ago we asked Mr. Mousiades to help organize and staff Anatolia's marketing department and direct all marketing activities. Herc agreed but his prior commitments limited his involvement to a part time basis and for a period of only two years. With the two years he had committed to us now up, he will be transitioning out of his current role as the institution's Marketing Director over the next month or so.

The success of Herc's efforts is apparent in the quality of the team he leaves in place, quality of our communications to outside constituencies, our advertising campaigns and promotional activities, and ultimately in the measured gains in brand awareness and interest for our various programs, particularly at ACT. For all this, the President and I extend our most heartfelt thanks to him.

Mr. Mousiades will assist in transitioning most of his current responsibilities to Mr. Thodoros Papanestoros, a 1991 alum of ACT (then SBALA) who joined us as Marketing Manager on October 1. Mr. Papanestoros has a BS Degree in Marketing from Deree and an MA in Marketing from Middlesex University as well as over 7 years experience with various advertising agencies in Athens. He reports to me and is located at Stephens Hall.

Herc will continue to assist Anatolia in specific areas, advising the President and myself on various strategic projects, as well as, remaining a resource on marketing matters for Mr. Papanestoros and all of us. He will also continue as a member of ACT's graduate business faculty where he has been an exceptional asset over the last few years.

Again, please join me in thanking Herc for his continuing contributions and welcoming Mr. Papanestoros to our organization.

STUDENT ENROLLMENT ON THE UP AND UP

The last months have been hectic at ACT, as we’ve been working hard to spread the word and make headway in student recruitment against numerous odds and tough competition.  The end result: Enrollment has increased considerably across the board with more candidates from Greece as well as the nearby countries and beyond in the incoming class.

…and the thank you goes to…
…everyone!  The recruitment and admissions office, marketing, division chairs, faculty, administrative offices, all played key roles in the student recruitment effort.  Still it should be underlined that a major reason for this success is the living testimony of alumni who make ACT proud.

Of course, rest is not for the weary.  Yes, we’ve all worked hard. And yes, the results were positive and are indeed encouraging.  With prospects of ongoing changes in the educational environment in Greece, matters could improve significantly yet.   So, we all need to work even harder for even better results. ACT has the potential and deserves more and higher caliber students.  The recruitment and admissions office has recently submitted an annual report, where careful analysis of statistics, has pointed to areas for improvement, or possibly new approaches.  A comprehensive annual recruitment plan is currently being compiled and ideas are more than welcome.

With team effort, a targeted strategy and hard work we can look forward to a record recruitment year for 2008.

Chairs' Corner
Dr. Nikos Kourkoumelis
Chair, Business Division nikolaos@act.edu
To begin with, I would like to wish everyone in the ACT community a positive academic year.

In the Business Division, we look forward to an exciting year at the graduate and undergraduate levels. There are a number of important events on the immediate horizon. We wish to inform you as soon as possible of business events, as they become known, because attendance by our faculty, business students and alumni will enhance the quality of education for our students/alumni and intellectual development of our faculty. Click here to see the scheduled Business Division events for this fall.

Dr. David Wisner
Chair, HSS Division drd@act.edu

It’s hard to believe but the old HIR major was launched in September 1997, ten years ago. The degree has undergone several modifications since then, some cosmetic, others more substantial, but the core of the program is still pretty much the same.

In 2007-08, we can expect five recent initiatives to bear fruit. First, thanks to the efforts of Anatolia Trustee, Antonis Kamaras, ACT has approached the Southeast European Studies Program at Oxford University about setting up a jointly administered special summer seminar to compliment our normal study abroad summer fare. ACT will host the director of the SEESOX program, Othon Athanasakis, in late November for a new round of talks aimed at creating a pilot program for June 2008.

Second, ACT will be inviting select past Dukakis lecturers and other friends of the college to create an advisory board for the IR program. Already, Michael Dukakis has agreed in principle and several others have indicated an interest. The board will provide expert advice on any number of issues, including post-graduate and career opportunities for ACT alumni. It is expected that the first board circular will be sent out by the end of the 2007 calendar year.

Third, the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences has completed a draft proposal aimed at securing validation of the BA in IR from a leading British university. This is part of a college-wide effort to ensure that ACT is able to complete with other private institutions once Greece is obliged by the European Commission to grant professional licensure to students graduating from colleges in Greece formally affiliated with European universities. The overall objective is for ACT to retain its NEASC accreditation and to give up as little of its characteristic American curriculum as possible.

Also, ACT has begun discussions with Northeastern University about enhancing the strategic partnership between our two institutions. ACT hosted two senior administrators from Northeastern this past week about a variety of possible projects, including joint degrees, distance learning opportunities, and faculty exchange schemes. ACT has several important friends and supporters at Northeastern, not least of all Michael Dukakis, and we look forward to taking action on several of the different items discussed last week.

Finally, ACT has been approached by the US Consulate General of Thessaloniki to co-sponsor and coordinate one in a series of American studies mini-seminars in the coming year. The general idea is to modify the format of the annual seminar, which celebrated its tenth anniversary last May, and to reach out to other institutions in Thessaloniki and Northern Greece to help diversify and inject new vigor into the event by drawing in part on ACT’s special resources, including the Dukakis Chair and the Lucy Center.

As you look around you will see that a pretty decently-sized incoming class in IR has just joined our ranks. There is significant reason to believe that numbers will increase in the semesters to come as we enhance our public profile with these initiatives. On this note I wish you all another great semester at ACT.

Dr. Panos Vlachos
Assistant Dean of Faculty and Information Technology & Chair, Tech and Sciences Division
pvla@act.edu
I would like to welcome all returning and newly-hired faculty and provide my best wishes for an academically productive and joyful 2007-2008 academic year. We are delighted to welcome three new faculty members, Dr. Homer, Dr. Koumpis and Mr. Anastasiadis whom I am sure we will all assist to adjust to the new academic environment.

We have ahead of us a promising academic year where the focus will be on quality standards in teaching and on expanding our research activities. A number of formal and informal faculty meetings will be devoted to these two subjects and more information will be sent to you shortly.

I am glad to inform you that all three internally funded research projects are progressing as scheduled and have resulted in a number of publications and conference presentations and student involvement. The new deadline for submitting preliminary proposals for the Internal Research Initiative for the academic year 2007-2008 is October 15th and faculty are strongly encouraged to submit their proposals.

A faculty exchange agreement has been signed with the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. UW-Eau Claire’s College of Business has received a Department of Education grant to provide opportunities for faculty from both UW-Eau Claire and ACT to have site visits and to collaborate. This two-year grant will take place during the academic years 2007-2008 and 2008-2009.

A new interactive electronic whiteboard is now available to faculty. This was made possible through a generous donation by ACT’s alumni association. A training session is scheduled to take place in the next two weeks and faculty members will have the chance to become acquainted with the exciting features of this interactive whiteboard.

RESEARCH ON THE GREEK BANKING SECTOR

Mr. Kostas Klimis, Adjunct Professor of Marketing, has recently published the results of his research on the Greek banking sector for the period 1990-2003, in the Bulletin of the Hellenic Banking Association (June 2007). The study, which is part of Mr. Klimis’ doctoral thesis, focuses on the recent developments of the “bank branch” as a distribution channel for banking products and on the developments in the Greek banking sector during the period 1990-2003. The major findings of the study are:

  • The branch remains the major channel of distribution for banking products and services, despite the increase of alternative channels of distribution (i.e. ATM, internet banking, phone banking). However, drastic changes are taking place in its external and internal appearance and organization and in its role as a point of sale.
  • The Greek banking sector entered a phase of market concentration through mergers and acquisitions during the period 1996-1999, but after 2001, an increase of mobility by the entrance of new players into the sector is observed.
  • During the examined period, the sector demonstrated a remarkable growth potential that was interrupted only temporarily.
  • The prospects for the period after 2003 are that growth will continue, relying on the further expansion of the domestic retail banking business (consumer, mortgage loans, etc) and that the banking sector in the countries of S.E. Europe (i.e. Balkans, Turkey), where Greek banks have already taken a position, will be developed.

The published article raised many eyebrows as it received publicity from the press (printed and electronic) and two radio stations interviewed Mr. Klimis.

BISSELL LIBRARY NEW STAFF MEMBERS

The staff of the Bissell Library wishes everyone a pleasant and productive academic year. We encourage you to take advantage of the marvelous information resources the library provides and to check the New Book Display often because we are always adding books.

This semester, you will see some new faces among the staff at the library.

Library Assistant Russell Scragg holds a Diploma in Library and Information Studies from University College, London and was most recently the Librarian at Pinewood International School.

Stella Asderi is taking over for Library Assistant Areti Makri, who is on maternity leave. Stella is a TEI graduate in Library Science and fulfilled her internship requirement at the Eleftheriades Library of Anatolia College.

Tina Stylianidou Conn will fill in for Administrative Assistant Liza Vachtsevanou during her maternity leave this semester. Tina is a graduate of Anatolia College, ASMA and Queens College, New York and has worked in administrative positions in both Greece and the US.

Although there are changes in personnel at the Bissell Library this semester, what definitely has NOT changed is the excellent service you have always been able to count on! We all look forward to seeing you at the Bissell Library soon!

Who do you want to "meet"? Suggestions welcome!

ASSOCIATION's NEW LOGO

In the context of a comprehensive effort towards "refurbishment" of the Association's presentation both online and offline, Board members have started with the re-design of the Association's logo. We are optimistic that all of you will embrace the Association's new logo since it reflects back to that great moment of our college years—graduation—and is inspired by ACT's modern profile and Alumni ACTiveness.

We wish to thank Mr. Akis Tozoulis for his kind and immediate response to our request while welcoming him among our Association's friends and to our wide network of co-operative undertakings.

We will soon be re-designing the alumni website and are working towards a more effective and interactive online presentation.

Stay tuned for upcoming issues of our favorite College e-magazine for updates.
