Dr. Neils presented evidence for a radically new interpretation of the Parthenon frieze which situates the different sculptural sections, traditionally viewed as representing mythological scenes, within the larger context of the Periklean post-Persian War political program.  Her interpretation focuses especially on sculptural elements which depict scene which were novel to Greek art at the time.

The lecture was attended by over 50 students currently enrolled in ACT's Hellenic Studies program, as well as faculty and guests and was moderated by Dr. Maria Kyriakidou, ACT's resident expert in Greek history.

BLOOD DRIVE AT ACT

The ACT Blood Drive (Monday April 26th) was supported by the Hospital of "Aghios Pavlos" and was a good opportunity for ACT students to become part of a major cause, like blood donation.

After the session was over, nine (9) units were selected while about seven (7) were rejected for various reasons (not enough rest, piercing, medicine, etc).

The concentrated blood was added to the existing ANATOLIA blood "bank" and will support the needs of the ACT students and their relatives.

The following students deserve to be acknowledged:

NUNEZ RIVERA, Raul
SERDARIS, Stergios
KIPROUIKI, Malamati
BODINAKU, Kitiana
MARTORELLI, Joanna
SIORAS, Athanasios
BRUMBACK, Brandi and
BAKIR, Fares

The next ACT Blood Drive will be organized and implemented together with the ANATOLIA high school Blood Drive in a few months.

THE FIELD TRIP CLUB

The Field Trip Club has visited two sites so far this semester:

The first trip took place on the weekend of February 24-25 and a group of 47 ACT students accompanied by the field trip club advisor, Daphne Lamprou, visited the area of the Meteora. The group left on Saturday morning and first arrived in the city of Trikala, where the students were guided to the site of the old city, saw the ancient Asklepieion and had some time to wander around the city. Late afternoon, the group arrived in Kalabaka where they spent the night and, the next morning, they visited the rocks of the Meteora. The monasteries of St. Stephanos and the Great Meteoron were visited where the students had the chance to see the churches, the museums, get an idea about the monastic life and enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Meteora.

The second trip took place on March 10th and 11th and the area visited was the city of Volos and two of the villages of Mt.Pilio. The group of 24 students, along with the club advisor, left on Saturday morning for Volos. There they were toured the archaeological museum of the city and had lunch in one of the famous " tsipouradika ". The group
spent the evening in the village of Makrinitsa, one of the most representative villages of Mount Pilio, famous for its natural beauty, where students spent the night in an old mansion that had been converted into a hotel. The next morning the group visited the folk museum of Pilio, had time to explore the village and finally had lunch at Portaria, another nearby village. The group arrived in Thessaloniki early in the evening on Sunday, clearly pleased by what they had seen during the weekend.

There are three more forays to the city remaining for the Spring ‘07 semester. On Saturday, March 24th, the Field Trip Club will visit the monument of the Rotonda, the Arch of Galerius and the Byzantine Museum of Thessaloniki. Following the Spring/Easter Break, they will visit the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and the last event will be a visit to the Macedonian Museum of Modern Art.

ACT CAREER FAIR 2007

The BLCS would like to thank all ACT staff and faculty for their support of this year’s Career Fair.

The ACT Career Fair 2007 came to a close on Thursday, March 22, 2007. Approximately 130 interviews were conducted over the course of 3 days with 15 firms in the Bissell Library. Juniors, seniors, MBA students and alumni participated in the annual interviewing event. Overall, the event served its purpose in giving candidates the opportunity to interview on campus as well as strengthening ties between ACT and the business community.

However, this event does not put an end to the job search process. On the contrary, candidates should be asking themselves “So now what???”

  • Did candidates evaluate themselves and their interviewing skills?
  • Did candidates give feedback to the BLCS office about their interviews?
  • Are candidates continuing to compile a list of companies they aim to approach?
  • Did thank you notes/letters go out to the company representatives who conducted the interviews? (A sample of a standard thank you letter can be found here.

The follow-up of a career fair is just as important as the preparation. Candidates should be considering these and other questions as part of their overall job search activities. Don’t forget that finding a job is a full time job!!

There’s no time like the present to get a jump start on your career. More details in the next issue.
