FROM MBA GRADUATE TO CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE

George Dimarelos, our recent Honors graduate of the 2006 MBA class, who is also a prominent engineer in the transportation sector, ran for city council in the recent municipal elections alongside another Anatolia alum, Ioannis Boutaris!

Though the overall bid did not succeed George does not think this is the end of his or Mr. Boutaris efforts. He had hoped to use some of what he's learned in the MBA program to bring about some change and some sorely needed improvements to Thessaloniki.

George said about his candidacy: "Having always lived in Thessaloniki, it is very sad for me to watch Thessaloniki not living up to the expectations that we all have for our home city. Thessaloniki is like a 30 year- old woman who still wears the clothes she had from when she was 5. I believe that Mr. Boutaris can unify us all, no matter what our political backgrounds, in our goal to make Thessaloniki a better place to live.

As far as I am concerned, I never expected that I would have the opportunity to exercise the knowledge that I gained in the MBA program so soon after my graduation in such a serious subject as local government. I would like to thank ACT for the education and confidence it provided me, to feel ready for such a step in my life."

His MBA should be an important asset to his efforts since the leadership communication skills, statistical analysis knowledge, the marketing skills, the human resources management training, the decision making process tools, organizational behavior, crisis situation management, and strategic thinking skill are all necessary for a successful local government leader.

We wish George all the best in his efforts.

ACT TEFL
TEAM AT THE TESOL CONVENTION

The ACT TEFL team participated in the 14th Annual Convention of the TESOL Macedonia-Thrace, Northern Greece. “The Whole Professional: Rethinking teaching in and out of the classroom” was held at the Capsis Hotel during the weekend of 29 September 29-October 1, 2006.

As one of the many exhibitors present (book publishers, language schools, examination centers, teacher-training services, etc.), ACT and its TEFL program representatives staffed a well-equipped, attractive stand which carried a display of ACT promotional materials covering both undergraduate and MBA levels, and they demonstrated the new promotional DVD. Members of the ACT TEFL teacher-training team were there to answer questions on the TEFL program and, together with Mr. Giannis Nasiopoulos, ACT Recruitment Officer, did a 30-minute PowerPoint and interactive presentation on ACT and the TEFL program in particular. The convention was very well-attended and helped to raise awareness for ACT and its programs.

WELCOME NOTE

I would like to welcome back all students, faculty and staff members and provide my best wishes for a productive, challenging and joyful 2006-2007 academic year. The recent upgrades in our IT infrastructure that included, among other things, the replacement of all hardware and software in the multimedia lab, the introduction of a wireless network and the upgrade of the file server will definitely improve the services that we offer to our students and faculty and enable us to continue to offer high quality academic programs and certificates in the areas of web development and digital media.

Congratulations to our graduate Menelaos Bakopoulos, recipient of the Stavros S. Niarchos Award for Excellence in Computing for the academic year 2005-2006, for being accepted to the MSITT program of Athens Information Technology (AIT) with a partial scholarship. There is an upcoming lecture organized by the Division of Technology and Science on learning technologies. Dr. Charalampos Karagiannidis, Assistant Professor of e-Learning, University of Thessaly, will present the topic “Learning Technologies in the Knowledge Society”. Bus Trip to Chalkidiki

The study abroad trip was as fun as it was adventurous.

The group, escorted by Emmanuel Maou, left early Saturday morning with the destination of the Makednon Hotel. The weather was not freezing yet far from warm. Many students chose to go swimming while other stayed on the beach with their sweaters on! Soon enough the rain came, which did not dampen the group’s spirits. For dinner, we went to the town of Marmaras and continued through the early hours of the morning with discussion and bonding activities in the hotel living room. The next day brought rain and more rain. Thus a group decision was taken to travel through the wooded mountains of Chalkidiki with the destination of an underground river close to the town of Serres, with a short stop on the way to Thessaloniki at the ancient site of the Amphipolis Lion. All and all, we had fun and parted with pleasant memories of the weekend.

Sailing Trip to Chalkidiki

Once again an adventure!

A group of Study Abroad students, not so large in size yet HUGE in spirit, elected to participate in this trip. Two 44 -foot sailboats left Friday evening from the E.O.T. marina in Thessaloniki and made their way to the port of Nea Michaniona. After a short dinner, the group settled in the boats to rest for an early departure on Saturday morning with the destination of the Sani Resort Marina. The day was spent swimming, shopping and relaxing. The evening brought a group dinner and party on one of the boats, complete with high spirits and fun times which by no means prepared the group for Sunday's adventure! Sunday came with unexpected winds and some rain, so a decision was made by the two skippers for an early departure for Thessaloniki. On the way back there were some waves and, after a stop in the town of Kalikratia for a short lunch, the one boat returned on time to the departure marina. The second boat ran into some unexpected technical problems. These led to anchoring outside of the port of Nea Michaniona, disembarking of the aspiring sailors via speedboat and a safe and warm return to Thessaloniki via automobile. Great praise goes to the crew of the second sailboat for their good spirits and endurance despite the streak of bad luck and problems they encountered! All and all, another experience to be remembered for years to come.
