Dr. Kanellis receives Distinguished
Service Award
By unanimous decision of Anatolia’s Trustees, Dr. Panos Kanellis, Executive Vice President and COO of Anatolia, was conferred the Distinguished Service Award, in recognition of his exceptional service to the institution over the past year. In absence of a Provost, Dr. Kanellis devoted extraordinary time and creative energy to the American College of Thessaloniki over the last year and his contributions are evident today. The award was presented by President Jackson and we join in extending our congratulations for this well deserved recognition. |

For the fourth consecutive year, ACT students from the Business Division are teaming up with their counterparts from Ohio University in a cooperative education program titled Global Competitiveness Practicum (GCP 2006). Taking part in the program gives students firsthand, professional experience in the business field. Students work in teams and carry out a number of real world projects that help them develop leadership, problem-solving and interpersonal skills, as well as learn to be innovative. This year the following companies are graciously supporting our program:
The lead-instructors for the program are Mr. Chris Grammenos from ACT and Dr. Costas Vassiliadis from Ohio University. On May 30, 2006, Dr. Miranda Xafa, an Alternate Executive Director on the Board of the International Monetary fund, made a presentation to the faculty and students of the American College of Thessaloniki that focused on the purpose and the evolving role of the IMF. She talked about the IMF being an international organization of 184 members whose purpose is to promote international monetary cooperation, exchange stability, and foster economic growth; in other words, to help countries meet the challenges of globalization. Thus, the three main functions of the IMF are: 1) Surveillance
(regular policy analysis, assessment, and advice, for all countries) Dr. Xafa has taught economics at the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University. This was her second visit to ACT. Dr. PANTSIOS PRESENTS PAPER Professor Archontis Pantsios presented a paper entitled "Trade and Conflict: The Case of Greece and Turkey" at the 10th Annual International Conference on Economics and Security, which was held in Thessaloniki, June 22-23, 2006 |

Dr. Kyriakidou has also been invited to collaborate in research by
the Mediterranean Institute for Gender Studies at Intercollege Cyprus. |

Dr. Niki Kouvatsi presented the paper, “The Role of Technology in Teaching Business Statistics at the American College of Thessaloniki” at the International Congress on Mathematics, which took place in Cyprus from May 31st to June 4th. Dr. Panos Vlachos and Mr. Manolis Maou presented the paper, “The Interaction of Computer Algebra Systems and Course Management Systems in Teaching Business Calculus at the American College of Thessaloniki” at the 12th International Conference on Applications of Computer Algebra (ACA 2006) held June 26 – 29, 2006 in Varna, Bulgaria. |

The spring 2006 Mt. Olympus excursion was a great success for all participants.
On May 28, 16 ACT students, an MBA candidate and an escort, managed to reach
the summit Mytikas of Mt. Olympus (2,918 meters). The perfect weather conditions
and the discipline shown by everyone, led to an unforgettable journey to
the mountain of the gods. STUDY ABROAD: SUMMER 2006 A total of 60 U.S. Study Abroad students are attending the Summer Session, adding significantly to the cultural diversity of the ACT student body. This is the highest number of Study Abroad students to study at ACT in a single session. These students participated in a two-day comprehensive orientation June 19-20, which included a trip to Vergina to visit the tombs of the ancient Macedonian kings. TALK

INTERNATIONAL BEACH HANDBALL TOURNAMENT AT ACT The American College of Thessaloniki, in cooperation with the Hellenic Beach Handball Committee, organized the “1st American College of Thessaloniki Cup”, an International Beach Handball tournament that took place in its newly constructed “Beach Sports Court”. The event was part of the “7th National Beach Handball Circuit” and of the “European Beach Handball Tour (EBT) 2006”. On May 18-19, 2006, Library Director Karen Bohrer attended a conference at the New York Public Library as a guest of the Stavros S. Niarchos Foundation. “The Future Public Library” brought together librarians, information technologists, architects, urban planners, and others to exchange ideas on what the library of the future can and should be in order to remain a vital institution. The Niarchos Foundation, a staunch supporter of ACT and NYPL, organized the conference which included 80 participants from 13 countries.
