EU-Funded Projects

BASKI

Anatolia/ACT was a partner member of a consortium working on a research project which was under EU funding (namely the SPO – Sport, Action SCP -Collaborative Partnerships Proposal, Call for Proposals 2019-EAC-A03- 2018) titled: Basketball for Life Skills (BASKI). The project ended in June 2022.

Our network consisted of seven partners from six different European countries (among which the Center for Social Innovation, Cyprus, run by an ACT alumnus, with the Cyprus Basketball Federation as the leader of the consortium. The project developed a training program for basketball coaches, sports educators, sports and education decision makers on how to promote basketball among primary school students as a medium of life skills development, with emphasis on civic participation and social contribution. Through a series of actions, BASKI partners introduced basketball as a sport, and at the same time will encouraged the young people by setting the right foundations for a lifelong sports involvement, which in parallel develops their major life skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, empathy, leadership, decision making, planning, visioning, empowering their active social participation and contribution.

EuCogII

2nd European Network for the Advancement of Artificial Cognitive Systems, Interaction and Robotics

The 2nd European Network for the Advancement of Artificial Cognitive Systems, Interaction and Robotics is a Horizon Europe project funded by the European Commission under the "Cooperation": Information and communication technologies program-https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/231281 EuCogII with a total budget of 1.908.337 euros sets up a network of several hundred European researchers in the wider area of artificial cognitive systems, with an emphasis on participants in projects of FP7 ICT "Cognitive Systems, Interaction, Robotics", building on the achievements of the FP6 project "EUCognition." We expect that the EUcogII will lead to a close-knit community of well-trained researchers, who have a clear sense of what has been achieved and of the challenges that lie ahead. The network comprises 8 partners and is coordinated by ACT’s Professor Vincent Müller at Anatolia College. The project starts on February 1, 2009 and ends on January 31, 2012.

EuCogIII

3rd European Network for the Advancement of Artificial Cognitive Systems, Interaction and Robotics

The 3rd European Network for the Advancement of Artificial Cognitive Systems, Interaction and Robotics is a continuation of EuCogII with a total budget of 1.996.165 euros-https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/269981.The project organizes a network of many hundreds of researchers and continues building the cognitive systems community in Europe, which straddles the divides of traditional academic disciplines in its work towards artificial intelligent systems that are autonomous, robust, flexible and self-improving in pursuing their goals. EUCogIII focuses on reaching out to show what artificial cognitive systems research has to offer and to increase the impact of the research already done. EUCogIII builds bridges from the network to related communities, especially with a view towards application of artificial cognitive systems research in robotics, but also in other areas of industry that move towards systems that are more intelligent and inspired by natural systems. Comprised of 8 partners, the project is coordinated by ACT’s Professor Vincent Müller at Anatolia College. Project timeline: November 2011 – December 2014.

Digital Do It Yourself (DiDIY)

Comprised of seven partners, the Digital Do It Yourself (DiDIY) is a Horizon Europe project that run for 30 months (January 2015-June 2017). The risks, social impact and ethical problems of Digital DIY are researched within the European research project Digitial DIY in "Horizon 2020." These issues are tackled by the research team of Prof. Vincent C. Müller and Dr. Alexandre Erler at Anatolia College/ACT. The Anatolia College/ACT budget is 229.688 euros.

Erasmus+

Anatolia/ACT was a partner member of a consortium under the Erasmus+ KA3 Social inclusion and common values: the contribution in the field of education and training which run the research project titled: InGame - Gaming for Social Inclusion. The project ended in June 2023.

The project involved the development of an educational online game, its associated services and maintenance and the dissemination of results on pedagogical practices among young adult learners. The network consisted of nine partners from eight different countries (Spain, Greece, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Poland, Italy, Lithuania, and Romania) with the University of Salamanca as the leader of the consortium. The overall value of the game is to enhance critical reflection on social and political circumstances, build skills and stimulate interest for common values that would eventually lead to social inclusion. The program run from January 2020 to June 2023 and enhanced the College's research record and partnership opportunities with EU universities and agencies. It is beneficial both to faculty and students that participated in various stages of the project.

Exploring the Monroe Doctrine and Greek-American Relations with Professor Aristotelis Tziampiris

On Tuesday, November 14th, 2023, ACT students and faculty attended an intellectually stimulating experience as Dr. Tziampiris, Professor of International Relations and Chair of the Department of International and European Studies, University of Piraeus, took center stage to deliver a thought-provoking public lecture, titled "The Monroe Doctrine and Greek-American Relations."

The lecture at the Bissell Library of ACT left an indelible mark on all attendees, as Dr. Tziampiris discussed the effects of the Greek Revolution and the Monroe Doctrine on defining Hellenic-American relations for the following centuries. The well-attended event welcomed students and faculty of ACT, with the support of Dr. Panos Vlahos, President of Anatolia College, Dr. Stamos Karamouzis, ACT Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Maria Kyriakidou, Chair of Humanities Division and Social Sciences at ACT, Dr. David Wisner, Professor of Political Science and International Relations and Executive Director of ACT Dukakis Center, Dr. Christos Aliprantis, Adjunct Professor of Social sciences, and Dr. Joseph Michael Gratale, Professor of Political Sciences and International Relations, who introduced AristotleTziampiris to the audience.

Tziampiris 2

Tziampiris 3

The lecture covered different significant figures in American history and their communication with Greek leaders while illuminating a critical piece of history highlighting contemporary relations between nations. Dr. Tziampiris outlined through this thorough research that the 1821 Greek Revolution elicited widespread and multifaceted support from America's free citizens, regardless of region, class, wealth, sex, religion, or partisan affiliation. The "Greek Fire" burned bright and intense in nineteenth-century America and captivated the American public. Nevertheless, the promulgation of the Monroe Doctrine led to the non-recognition of the republican Greek revolutionaries. Forged by the interaction of multiple forceful personalities operating within specific institutions and representing a high point for the well-established tradition of neutrality in international affairs, the Doctrine aimed to navigate the treacherous headwinds of Great Power politics.

Dr.Tziampiris effortlessly navigated complex concepts, making them accessible to attendees at all levels of familiarity with the subject. An interactive Q&A discussion followed, with students engaging in conversation and reflecting on the insights gained by the lecture.

Dukakis Center hosts unprecedented student debate on earth shattering current events

“One thing bothers me when I read the news. We use terms like “unprecedented” too much!” So opined ACT Professor Christos Aliprantis, who animated a debate on current events with select ACT and study abroad students in the Constantinidis Hall Conference Room on Wednesday, November 17. The point of departure for the debate was a pair of opinion pieces appearing in mainstream English-language media days earlier, the one by Martin Wolf in the Financial Times, the other by Stephen Walt in Foreign Policy. Both articles foreshadowed fundamental changes to the international order as a result of key events in different parts of the world: the prospect of the reelection of Donald Trump in the United States (Wolf), and the aftermath of the war in Gaza (Walt).

The purpose of the debate was less to discuss the accuracy of these journalists’ predictions than to assess certain media practices, among which to claim that the world would forever be different as a result of this or that current event.

(Source: National Centers for Environmental Information)

The pace of decisive change cannot be disputed, and can be illustrated not only in political or military terms, but also in terms of the cost of natural disasters. Lisa Desjardins polled readers of PBS's “Here’s the Deal” newsletter only to find that by popular demand “unprecedented” was their word of the year. (Desjardins reports that the term first gained hitherto unheard of popularity in 17th-century England, following the execution of Charles I.) Yet such is the prevalence of the metaphor of extraordinary or unparalleled happenstances in contemporary life that John Prideaux, writing in The Economist, has claimed, “It is hard to overstate how important the outcome [of the 2024 US Presidential election] will be, for America and the world,” and quipped “Words like ‘uncharted’ and ‘unprecedented’ were worn out by the end of Mr Trump’s first term. America will need new ones for this election.”

ACT’s student body, or a representative sample thereof, are more ambivalent, pointing to a lack of trust in the media generally and a generational shift away from their elders’ (and their professors’) manner of talking about current affairs. Do students even read the newspapers anymore? Yes or no, they acquitted themselves admirably in the debate, sparking admiration among Professors Aliprantis, Gratale, and Wisner, one of whose jaws dropped to the floor momentarily (but was it a yawn?).

There is nothing unprecedented about the aptitude of your typical ACT student, but one never fails to be amazed nonetheless.

Dukakis Center commissions poll on the youth vote in Greece

The Dukakis Center at ACT will celebrate its 25th anniversary season of public service initiatives during the 2023-24 academic year. The theme of this year's celebration, "Back to Fundamentals," has been conceived to draw renewed attention to the Center's principal mission, encouraging young people in Greece and beyond to engage meaningfully in public affairs.

To set the stage, the Center commissioned Harry Lalatsis, founder of Ierax Analytix, Anatolia High School, and ACT MBA alumnus, to conduct a groundbreaking pan-Hellenic poll of young voters who voted in one or both parliamentary elections in 2023. The purpose of the poll was to explore the contours of the youth vote in Greece in light of parliamentary, local, and European elections scheduled to take place in 2023 and 2024. What drives voters aged 18-29, notorious for their higher-than-average abstention rates, to cast their ballots come election day?

On October 18, 2023, the Dukakis Center hosted the public unveiling of Mr. Lalatsis' findings at the Thessaloniki TechLab.

The event was moderated by Filios Stangos, Director of ERT3, Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation. Eftichia Teperoglou, Assistant Professor at the School of Political Science (AUTH), provided expert commentary.

Mr. Lalatsis' team approached a sample of 524 respondents aged 18-29 from throughout Greece, who were questioned online between September 4-14, 2023, while twenty additional extended face-to-face interviews were also conducted. The poll was unique insofar as it focused on those in the youth cohort who do vote, not on those who refrain from voting and sought to ascertain what matters to younger voters.

Among the key points to emerge from Mr. Lalatsis' presentation was the ambivalence that seemed to prevail among younger voters: excited by the prospect of voting for the first time or voting for a second (or, in certain cases, a third time) out of a sense of civic duty, they were disappointed with the choices and less than enthusiastic about the outcome of the elections. Mr. Lalatsis also noted the preference of younger voters for candidates who used social media adroitly. Very few, if any, youth relied on newspapers, television, or radio for information ahead of the elections. In this sense, a veritable generation gap separating youth from their elders emerged clearly from the poll.

Dukakis Center Youth Pole 10

The data presented by Mr. Lalatsis offered a picture that tends to mirror political sentiment in Britain and the United States but is mainly at odds with a narrative emanating from Brussels, according to which elections in Europe since 2019 were entering a new dimension.

To explore further this apparent disconnect, a second panel considered findings from recent Eurobarometer polling on the youth vote throughout Europe. The EU data were presented by Gonzalo Velasco Monasterio, data and public opinion analyst at the European Parliament, who joined the proceedings virtually from Brussels. Meanwhile, Dukakis Center Director David Wisner provided additional insight from instruments like the annual Harvard Youth Poll and discussed common approaches to promoting youth participation in the United States.

A lively audience of students and seasoned political observers attended the event and contributed to the discussion, which ran over time. Among these present were several candidates in recent municipal elections in Greater Thessaloniki, including ACT alumni Jolda Druga and Theofanis Kontoulis.

The Dukakis Center has hosted scores of voter registration initiatives and other election-related activities for the benefit of American citizens since 2000, bearing in mind that, as colleague Ryan Drysdale of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge has recently noted, "under the Higher Education Act, [American] colleges and universities have a legal obligation to make a good-faith effort to help students register to vote."

The Center has a long history of research and public inquiry into voting and elections. Back in 2016, the Center commissioned Nikos Marantzidis and George Siakas of the Public Opinion Research Unit, University of Macedonia, to conduct a national poll on voting behavior in the 2015 parliamentary election in Greece, findings from which were presented at the landmark conference "Civic Engagement and the Practices of Democracy."

Throughout its 25-year history, the Dukakis Center has been at the cutting edge of public debate. As one prominent Greek journalist put it on the eve of the October 18 event, the youth vote is "το πιο επίκαιρο θέμα της εποχής!"

Public Lecture “The Monroe Doctrine and Greek-American Relations”

"The Monroe Doctrine and Greek-American Relations" is the title of the public lecture that Dr. Aristotle Tziampiris will deliver in English open to the public at the Bissell Library of ACT on Tuesday, November 14th, 2023, at 15:00. Dr. Tziampiris, Professor of International Relations and Chair of the Department of International and European Studies, University of Piraeus, has recently published the book "The Monroe Doctrine and the Greek Revolution (Studies in Diplomacy and International Relations, Palgrave McMillan, 2023)

Based on his thorough research, Professor Tziampiris examines how the Greek Revolution and the Monroe Doctrine defined Hellenic-American relations for the following centuries.

The 1821 Greek Revolution elicited widespread and multifaceted support from America's free citizens, regardless of region, class, wealth, sex, religion, or partisan affiliation. The "Greek Fire" burned bright and intense in nineteenth-century America. It aimed to promote national unity and maximize America's power and independence of action while minimizing entanglements and interventions by European countries, yet the fact remains that public opinion was not heeded when it came to the issue of Greece. We will thus evaluate the reasons that led to Greece's non-recognition. Personal political or financial ambitions will not be deemed to have sufficient explanatory power. Broader commercial interests, in conjunction with the tradition of neutrality and the ultimate American ambition for Hemispheric hegemony, created a framework that made the recognition of Greece in 1823 extremely difficult, given how President Monroe and his Administration defined the national interest. However, what remains remarkable is how high on the policy agenda the Greek Revolution was and how close it came to being politically vindicated.

This public lecture will argue that the specific case study discussed essentially set the parameters for Greek-U.S. relations for the following two centuries.

ACT hosts European Lacrosse Federation Board meeting

The Board of the European Lacrosse Federation met at the premises of ACT, at Stavros Constantinidis Hall, on October 23, 2023. The meeting was held on the occasion of the Lacrosse Sixes games (6v6) that took place at the American Farm School, also celebrating the inclusion of lacrosse in the Olympics. World Lacrosse’s decades-long vision to return the sport to the Olympic stage has been realized, with the International Olympic Committee approving lacrosse’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The European Lacrosse Federation (ELF) plays a prominent role in developing and promoting lacrosse in Europe. With the recent announcement of lacrosse being awarded the Olympic identity for the 2028 Olympic Games, the sport is gaining even more recognition and support. Anatolia College/ACT has been actively involved in the introduction and growth of lacrosse within its extracurricular activities. Through partnerships and donations from organizations like World Lacrosse, ELF, GLA, and passionate individuals, a significant amount of equipment has been acquired to support the development of lacrosse at the institution.

The meeting was coordinated by the ACT Athletic and Student Activities Office and its coordinator Stepan Partemian.

The introduction of lacrosse to the Anatolia College/ACT extracurricular activities started in 2015 when Anatolia College President Dr. Panos Vlachos and VP of Institutional Advancement Peter Chresanthakes, met in the US with George G. Katsiaounis who inspired them to adopt the sport at the school and provided financial support sponsoring a seasoned coach and equipment to entice young students to participate. ACT was the perfect partner to introduce lacrosse to Greece as many US study abroad students are avid players.

The introduction of lacrosse to the Anatolia College/ACT extracurricular activities In 2017, a large amount of equipment arrived at Anatolia College as part of donations from World Lacrosse, ELF, GLA, and other individuals. In July 2018, the Greek National team had its training period on our campus just before going to the World Cup in Israel. In 2019, Jason Pereles arrived and went through all PE classes at the Anatolia High School and Anatolia Elementary School. Many students played lacrosse at that time, and some were members of the recent Greece Lacrosse team.
