The ACT Writing Center is a service provided to all ACT students throughout their years at ACT. It offers a warm and supportive atmosphere in which students can receive assistance with all writing assignments and with the overall development of their language skills.
The Center operates on an appointment or walk-in basis throughout the academic year, during which times both professional and peer tutors are available to assist students of all levels with improving their written and oral expression. From helping students explore a subject, to working with students to restructure a document for better coherence or unity, to rethinking and revising – the Writing Center tutors are available to provide customized guidance. Students may seek such guidance on their assignments at any stage in the writing process.
We recommend that all first-semester students visit the Writing Center to familiarize themselves with the Center's facilities, which include 5 computers on which students can draft assignments and/or conduct writing-related research, and discuss with the tutor the range of services which the Center can offer during their years at ACT.
The ACT Writing Center is located on the 1st floor of the Bissell Library. We accept either walk-in appointments or those scheduled in advance. To contact the Writing Center for an appointment, please call Mrs Georgia Nenopoulou on 2310 398 223 or e-mail her at: nenogeo@act.edu.
We look forward to assisting you with any language-development or writing-related tasks.

All ACT students are assigned a faculty advisor during New Student Orientation. Freshman/First Year advising is done exclusively by Academic Advising Coordinator Dr. Niki Kouvatsi (eak@act.edu). Subsequently, another faculty member is assigned to a student to serve as his or her advisor most probably until graduation. The Academic Advisor helps students to plan their overall program of studies, as well as to select courses each semester. Advisors also provide information about ACT academic and support services, assist students in confronting problems they may be experiencing with particular courses within a given semester, and offer ongoing advice concerning the students' long-term academic and career goals.
An Academic Advisor is not only a person with whom students can discuss particular problems―he or she is also someone who is there to help students with larger issues concerning their goals for receiving the best possible education they can while at ACT. In addition, the Academic Advisor is the faculty member with whom students will have to meet in advance of every registration period to work out their course schedule for the following semester. The Academic Advisor is also the first person students must consult if they are considering changing their major field of study, declaring a double major, concentration, or minor, and the person whose signature they must obtain and with whom they should discuss the consequences if they decide to withdraw from a course during a semester in progress.
The Business Liaison/Career Services Office
The BUSINESS LIAISON / CAREER SERVICES OFFICE assists both alumni and currently enrolled students in their job search with local companies.
We assist students with the development of their Curriculum Vitae (CV)/resume, which should effectively present them both as a person and as a professional. These CVs can be forwarded to companies-, which have contacted the us to announce job openings.
Additionally, we provide assistance to students and alumni in connection with their career strategy and professional development.
For further information, please contact: Lena Giakoumopoulou, the Director, Business Liaison/Career Services, on 2310 398 202 or email her at: lenag@act.edu
Job Opportunities For ACT Students And Alumni Through The BLCS
Job Opportunities available through the Business Liaison / Career Services Office for ACT Students and Alumni are announced by e-mail. Students and Alumni should therefore check their e-mail accounts regularly for position openings, job fairs and other announcements.
Career Services To Alumni
We also offer services to alumni whether recently graduated, already employed or seeking a change of employment by providing CV and interviewing consultation, sending CVs to companies requesting personnel and assisting alumni at every level of their job search activities.
Steps In Your Career Search:
Step 1. Contact us to set up your first appointment.
Step 2. We will provide you with Resume/CV samples and can assist you in the revision process.
Step 3. Discuss your professional background the BLCS Director, who can propose available job positions which suit your interests and qualifications.
Step 4. With your consent, we then forward your CV to companies for the selected job openings.
Step 5. The interviewing process begins. You can call us for consultation on interviewing techniques.
Step 6. Congratulations!! You got the job and you remembered to inform us so we can update our alumni records.
Career Services For Students
Career Planning / Strategy Consultation
We invite currently enrolled students to come and discuss their career aspirations as these relate to their major/concentration/minor. We attempt to provide students with a clear indication as to the job trends in each case. If a student is in doubt as to his/her career direction, we address all his/her concerns based on current trends in the job market, linking it to the student's academic interests and career goals.
All students should get in touch with us as early as possible to address any questions or concerns which they may have.
Job Search Activities: CV Writing and Interviewing Workshops
Each year, we offer workshops in CV Writing and Interviewing Techniques to assist students in their entire career search process. These workshops are designed to prepare students for their professional future.
Student Employment & Internships
Students can search for part-time employment and internships through the BLCS. Students should check their e-mail accounts regularly for announcements of position openings and internships.
Another way to "fill" your CV especially when you have no prior work experience is to complete an internship, which gives you an edge during job interviews and a chance to step into the "real world" of a particular company. All internships give you an opportunity to test your "classroom theories" against today's "job realities". Also, an internship allows you to see whether you would be interested in a particular career path after graduation. Some internships are remunerated.
CV / Resume
Potential employers will see you on paper before they see you in person. Employers receive hundreds of resumes and cover letters a week, so you have to deliver a product that will attract their interest within 10-15 seconds. Think of a CV as a "sketch" not an autobiography. It should be a carefully-tailored marketing tool summarizing your employment qualifications for a pre-defined target audience. You can think of it as a print advertisement, only in this case the product is you and the consumer is your prospective employer. It is the primary tool that will serve as an appetizer. It is the means to gain – The Interview and the end result - The Position.
The Interview
The main objective is to provide the human dimension to your potential employer in the most sincere and professional manner. Your first "live" impression should be so convincing as to secure a second interview/ specific job offer. For the employer, the objective of the interview is to obtain enough of the right kind of information about you to make an accurate assessment of your qualifications, background and career goals, and to select the best possible candidate for his/her organization. For you, the objective of the interview is to make the most favorable impression possible and determine whether you are interested in working for that employer. The interview provides you with the chance to really sell your personality and convince the interviewer of what you can do for the company and why you belong on their team.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q) Will the staff in the BLCS office write my resume for me?
A) The office provides you with the resources required to write a resume. After writing a draft, you may make an appointment to see a staff member, who will review and critique your resume.
Q) Why should I do an internship, i.e. work for free or in the best case for a token amount of money?
A) Employers say they are looking for someone with experience, which makes it very difficult to get a job without prior experience. Completing an internship will give you an edge during job interviews as you will now have experience to discuss with prospective employers.
Q) Does the BLCS office actually place me in a job when I graduate?
A) We provide you with information regarding available jobs and then sends your CV to the positions you are interested in. The decision on whether or not to hire you is made by the company and not the BLCS office. However, our staff can assist you with resume writing and practice interviews so that you are well prepared before you meet with prospective employers.
Q) I have been looking for a job for two months, the BLCS has sent my resume to five companies, I had one interview, but no offers. What am I doing wrong?
A) Sometimes a job search is a numbers game. Five resumes over two months is not a large number. Keep in touch with us so that you remain aware of new openings.
Services For Companies
The services of the BLCS office are available to all interested companies. Company managers, HR directors, etc., are welcome to contact us in search of suitable personnel in many areas of expertise.
After we are contacted, we conduct a brief company visit in order to identify the company's personnel needs. Subsequently, the request is processed and the search and selection process (matching) begins. Once the CVs are collected, they are forwarded to the company which has placed the request. We aim to cover job openings for full-time and part-time positions, as well as internship requests.

INTERNET RESOURCES
The following websites are just a few of the many useful Internet resources, providing job-related information:
ACT's Graduate Education Office (GEO) guides students in their further educational goals. Graduates are assisted throughout the process of selecting appropriate programs and applying to ACT's or other postgraduate programs in numerous ways such as: website addresses for research into colleges / universities suited to their needs and qualifications, and coordination of recommendation letters prepared by faculty members. Two workshops are offered every fall semester, one for students interested in studying in the US (U.S. Advisor: Mrs. Eva Kanellis, ekanelli@act.edu ), the other targeted towards studying in the United Kingdom (U.K. Advisor: Mr. Costas Danas, cdanas@act.edu).
Students should visit the Graduate Education Advisors as soon as possible (1st and 2nd year) and not wait until their 3rd or 4th year, when the need for postgraduate education is just around the corner.
A recent survey of ACT alumni revealed that more than 30% have gone on to pursue postgraduate studies at leading universities.

Each semester, ACT hosts a number of study abroad students, chiefly from the United States. The College also maintains one-for-one exchange agreements with Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Monmouth College, Muskingum College in Ohio, Salve Regina University, St. Johns College, and St. Michaels College. Through these agreements, ACT students may spend a semester, normally in their second or third year of study, at a college in the U.S., and upon return to ACT receive full transfer credit for all courses successfully completed while abroad.
As a member of the Association of American International Colleges and Universities (AAICU), ACT cooperates with the other member institutions in assisting student exchanges. Accordingly, students planning to study abroad for up to one academic year may wish to consider applying to AAICU member institutions. The member institutions will consider for admission as non-degree students, preferably in their junior year, suitable applicants, who are in good academic standing and recommended by their home institution. The credits awarded by the host institutions are recognised as meeting degree requirements at ACT on condition that advance approval has been obtained from the Office of Academic & Student Affairs. Interested students should obtain their advisor's permission and then apply directly to the preferred AAICU member institution. Participants are responsible for paying directly to the cooperating school the tuition and fees in effect there.
The members of the AAICU are: The American College of Greece, ACT, The American University of Beirut, The American University in Bulgaria, The American University in Cairo, The American University of Paris, Franklin College (Switzerland), Haigazian University (Lebanon), Institute for American Universities (France), John Cabot University (Italy), Lebanese American University, Richmond, The American International University in London, and University of LaVerne (Greece).
For further information, students interested in the possibility of studying abroad may contact the Office of Academic & Student Affairs at apantsio@act.edu
